Avionics Software Lead
About the role
Qualifications: 6+ years of embedded firmware & software development experience (strong individual contributor track record).
Core Responsibilities
- System Architecture & Design
- Architect robust, scalable embedded system and firmware frameworks from sensor interfaces to real-time control loops and system services.
- Define module boundaries, abstraction layers, and interaction contracts between components.
- Analyze design trade offs, optimization, performance planning, etc.
2. Hands-On Firmware & Software Development
- Develop bare-metal firmware in C/C++, Build and maintain low-level drivers (GPIO, UART, SPI, I2C, CAN, ADC, timers, PWM), Integrate multi-modal sensing (IMU, barometers, GNSS, telemetry, actuators, etc).
- Proven experience taking custom boards from power-on to application-level firmware, MCU/SoC startup sequences, reset behavior, memory initialization, and low-level debug techniques using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and low-level register inspection.
- Implement performance and reliability features: watchdog strategy, fault handling, telemetry/diagnostics hooks, timing instrumentation, memory/stack analysis, CPU load measurement, and latency profiling (RTOS, memory, interrupts, peripherals).
- System Level Validation
- Establish CI/CD pipelines for firmware builds, testing, integration, and automated regression.
- Define code quality guidelines, static analysis, test coverage, documentation standards, debugging standards, workflows, etc.
- Design and execute system validation and verification plans, including unit, integration, HIL, and field tests.
- Cross-Functional collaboration
- Lead technical planning, sprint/roadmap sessions, and design reviews.
- Work closely with hardware, systems, controls, QA, product, and operations teams to align requirements, architecture, and schedules.
- Liaise with external partners/vendors when bringing up boards, sensors, communication modules, or integrating third-party IP.
- Mentor junior and mid-level firmware engineers in system design, debugging strategy, testing discipline, and best practices.
Required Qualifications
- Experience with flight control stacks or robotics embedded stacks (PX4, ROS interfacing, autopilots, etc.) is important.
- Experience integrating with control algorithms, sensor fusion, navigation stacks.
- Natural mentor with an ability to grow junior engineers.
- Excellent communicator capable of aligning cross-functional teams.
- Familiarity with safety or aerospace/military standards (e.g., MISRA, DO-178C, ISO 26262, STANAG).
