Backend Developer
Summary
Build and maintain server-side systems for a logistics and ecommerce group, using PHP, MariaDB, APIs, and WooCommerce to support internal tools and customer-facing platforms.
Based: The Dash Group Head Office, Redruth.
Employment Type: Permanent, full-time role.
The Dash Group is a fast-growing business operating in logistics, vehicle solutions, fulfilment and ecommerce, with sites across Devon and Cornwall. Due to the eclectic nature of the business, we have developed a range of bespoke web applications that support operational efficiency, business intelligence and customer services across the Group.
As a Back End Developer, you will be responsible for maintaining, developing and optimising the server-side systems that underpin these applications. Working closely with the Technical Director and Front-End Developer, you will help design scalable solutions, improve existing platforms and contribute to the continued growth of our internal systems and SaaS ambitions.
Duties & Responsibilities
Software Development & System Support
- Maintain, develop and support the server-side functionality of internal web applications.
- Review, improve and design database structures, stored procedures and queries.
- Develop new functionality to support changing business requirements.
- Ensure applications are reliable, secure and maintainable.
Database & API Development
- Design and optimise MariaDB databases to improve performance and scalability.
- Build and maintain APIs to integrate with third-party systems and data sources.
- Analyse and improve query performance, indexing and data structures.
- Support data consolidation and reporting across the business.
Ecommerce & Application Integration
- Support backend functionality for WooCommerce-based ecommerce websites.
- Develop integrations between ecommerce, operational and financial systems.
- Contribute to the ongoing enhancement of customer-facing and internal platforms.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with the Front-End Developer to deliver new applications and features.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements and identify solutions.
- Communicate technical concepts and design decisions to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support continuous improvement through proactive problem-solving and innovation.
- Gain a thorough understanding of existing systems and business processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve system performance, efficiency and user experience.
- Follow development best practices to ensure high-quality, maintainable code.
- Contribute to the long-term development and scalability of company systems.
What we’re looking for
- Strong commercial experience developing applications with PHP and object-oriented programming principles.
- Solid database design and optimisation skills using MariaDB or similar relational database platforms.
- Experience building APIs and working with HTTP, JSON and system integrations.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as Git.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a commitment to producing reliable, maintainable code.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- A proactive and inquisitive approach, with a genuine interest in understanding business challenges and developing practical solutions.
- Experience with WooCommerce, ecommerce platforms or business-critical operational systems would be advantageous.
