Backend Developer
Summary
Builds and maintains the core backend infrastructure for an education platform, focusing on multi-tenant architecture and role-based access control.
The Platform Backend Engineer is a vital member of the Core Product Build Organization, which represents our Highest Priority. This role is focused on the technical execution of our foundational infrastructure, specifically the implementation of multi-tenant architecture and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC).
Working within a selective, "Not Full Team" environment, you are responsible for building high-integrity systems where architectural mistakes are fatal later. You will ensure that all backend development supports the admin workflows that are core to launch success while maintaining the Build Velocity required to ramp once architecture is locked.
Key Duties & Accountabilities
Core Product Build & Architecture
- Execute the development of multi-tenant architecture and complex RBAC systems early in the build cycle.
- Build and maintain high-performance server-side logic and database schemas that serve as the platform's backbone.
- Prioritize the development of admin workflows, ensuring they are robust and scalable as they are core to launch success.
- Maintain high Build Velocity to ensure the team is ready to ramp once the primary architecture is locked.
Quality, Security, & Reliability
- Adhere to strict Quality, Security, and Reliability standards to meet the requirements of the Launch Gate.
- Implement critical-path automation only, avoiding vanity coverage to ensure efficient and effective testing of core services.
- Collaborate with the QA team to satisfy release gates before feature freeze.
- Ensure backend implementations prevent inconsistent admin UX by strictly adhering to established system patterns and data models.
System Governance & Documentation
- Establish system patterns once to ensure a single, scalable source of truth for the backend.
- Participate in deep technical reviews to catch and rectify potential architectural mistakes that could be fatal later.
- Document core APIs and system logic to allow for a seamless transition as the engineering team expands.
Minimum Hiring Requirements
- 5–8+ years of experience in Backend Engineering, with a focus on scalable SaaS platforms.
- Architecture Expertise: Proven experience implementing multi-tenant architectures and sophisticated RBAC models.
- High-Stakes Reliability: Demonstrated ability to build systems where Quality, Security, and Reliability are the primary metrics for success.
- Selective Efficiency: Experience working in a "Not Full Team" environment, requiring high autonomy and a focus on critical-path tasks.
- Technical Mastery: Advanced proficiency in backend languages (e.g., Go, Python, or Node.js) and cloud-native infrastructure.
- Launch Discipline: Experience operating under feature freeze conditions and meeting rigorous release gate criteria.
- Systems Mindset: Ability to establish a system once that remains consistent and prevents future technical debt.
