Job Description

We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join the Account Sharing team within Wise’s Consumer Squad. The team builds new shared finance products for consumers, including international joint accounts and kid accounts. The role is highly product‑oriented and involves shaping product direction from conception to launch.

Key responsibilities:

• Design and implement scalable distributed systems that power shared finance products used by millions of customers worldwide.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Designers, Data Analysts and User Researchers to translate customer insights into clear technical solutions.
• Own technical architecture, challenge assumptions, and influence product direction.
• Develop features around shared spending, sending/receiving money, and account customization.
• Ensure compliance with international regulations and financial infrastructure constraints.

Qualifications

• Experience building scalable distributed systems for customer‑facing products used by millions.
• Proficiency in backend languages such as Java, Kotlin, Python, or Go.
• Strong background in designing asynchronous, reliable, and scalable microservice architectures.
• Comfortable working in greenfield environments with evolving requirements.
• Product mindset – enjoy collaborating with product, design and research rather than just executing tickets.
• Strong focus on customer experience and understanding technical impact on end users.
• Ability to drive architectural discussions, challenge assumptions, and influence technical direction.
• Clean, maintainable, well‑tested code with attention to scalability and reliability.
• Excellent communication skills across technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Independent yet collaborative team player.

Nice to Have

• Experience building greenfield products from scratch.
• Experience on international consumer products.
• Experience in payments, financial systems or compliance‑heavy environments.
• Experience building systems at global scale.
• Familiarity with event‑driven architecture and messaging systems such as Kafka.

Benefits

• Starting salary: £87,500 – £111,000 + RSUs.
