Backend Engineer (C++)
Summary
Join an early-stage Imperial College AI/robotics spinout in London building a platform that helps manufacturers make decisions from real-time physical-system data. You'll build performance-critical C++ systems, Python bindings (pybind11), real-time data pipelines, and cross-platform Windows/Linux deployment.
- Imperial College AI, and Robotics Spinout
The Opportunity
- We’re partnering with an early-stage, venture-backed AI and engineering business developing software at the intersection of advanced computing and industrial technology.
- With a small, highly technical team, early commercial traction and ambitious growth plans, the business is building a platform that helps manufacturers make better decisions using complex, real-time data from physical systems.
- This is an opportunity to join at an early stage, take ownership of critical infrastructure and help shape the technical foundations of a product solving challenging problems in the real world.
The Role
- As a Backend Engineer, you’ll build and optimise the core systems responsible for ingesting, processing and storing high-volume data.
- You’ll work across performance-critical C++ systems, Python integration and real-time data pipelines, helping deliver reliable software into demanding customer environments.
- Expect complex engineering challenges, significant ownership and the opportunity to influence architecture and technical direction from day one.
What You’ll Work On
- Core systems development: Build high-performance C++ libraries for data processing and storage.
- Python integration: Develop bindings and APIs that make backend capabilities accessible to other engineering teams.
- Real-time data pipelines: Design efficient streaming and communication between services and applications.
- Cross-platform deployment: Maintain robust build systems, packaging and deployment across Windows and Linux.
- Reliability and performance: Improve error handling, logging, monitoring and performance across production systems.
What We’re Looking For
Someone who enjoys solving difficult systems problems and building software that performs reliably outside a development environment.
- 3+ years of commercial C++ development experience, ideally C++17 or later.
- Strong fundamentals in concurrency, multithreading, memory management and performance optimisation.
- Experience building software that handles large datasets or high-throughput data streams.
- A degree in computer science, engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- A pragmatic, hands‑on approach and the ability to deliver in a fast‑moving environment.
- Existing right to work in the UK.
Particularly Relevant Experience
- Real-time streaming and WebSocket communication.
- Python bindings, including pybind11 or similar frameworks.
- Scientific data formats and storage technologies.
- Large-scale structured, spatial or volumetric datasets.
- Signal processing, computer vision or sensor-driven applications.
- Industrial, scientific or other performance-critical software.
- Experience in an early-stage company or a rapidly evolving engineering team.
Why Join?
- Meaningful ownership: Help build the core technology underpinning an emerging AI platform.
- Complex engineering: Work on performance-critical systems where reliability and efficiency genuinely matter.
- Early-stage impact: Join a small team where your decisions can influence architecture, product development and engineering standards.
- Commercial traction: Contribute to a product already being used by paying customers.
- Long-term upside: Competitive compensation, bonus, benefits and meaningful equity.
