Backend Engineer
Summary
Backend engineer at clera, a pre-seed energy technology company in Berlin, building core infrastructure for dynamic electricity plans: a modular billing engine, accounting ledger, and energy-market integrations using TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, and PostgreSQL. On-site five days per week.
About the Role
This is a core infrastructure role at a pre-seed energy technology company building the foundational systems that power dynamic electricity plans, billing, and energy-market integrations across Europe. You will work directly on a modular billing engine, low-level energy-market communication protocols, and a full accounting ledger, helping design and scale systems that need to be both highly reliable and deeply extensible.
What You'll Do
Design systems that tame complexity, making hard infrastructure problems approachable and maintainable at scale.
Scale core backend services to handle the demands of a growing energy platform serving OEMs, installers, and end consumers.
Ship production code consistently, taking full ownership from design through deployment.
Raise engineering standards across the team through code review, architecture decisions, and a high personal bar for quality.
What We're Looking For
At least 3 years of hands-on experience building and shipping reliable backend infrastructure in production environments.
Proficiency in TypeScript and Node.js, with a strong understanding of asynchronous programming patterns.
Experience with PostgreSQL and ORM-based data access (Drizzle or similar).
Experience building backend services with Next.js, including API routes or server components.
Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and an instinct for designing scalable, maintainable services.
Experience integrating payment systems such as Stripe and handling complex billing flows.
Strong computer science fundamentals, whether through a formal degree or equivalent practical experience.
A track record of technical exceptionality, demonstrated through standout projects, competitive programming, research, founding work, or a comparable signal.
Broad application-building experience rather than a narrow specialization in data pipelines, AI infrastructure, or similar niches.
Strong written and verbal communication, with a clear ownership mindset and comfort operating in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment.
