Backend Engineer – Core Systems

Open 33d

You'll join Bank Core, working on the systems at the heart of N26 - accounts, ledgers, and the core banking logic every other team builds on. You'll help revamp the core, shaping decisions that reach across the entire company. Your services will be written almost exclusively in Kotlin on Spring Boot, deployed on Kubernetes, communicating over Kafka, backed by Postgres, and running on AWS. You'll lean heavily on agentic coding while staying in charge - questioning what the tools produce, reviewing every line, and owning the result. You'll work with a high degree of autonomy, collaborate closely with your team, and share what you learn.

Responsibilities

  • Own features end to end on systems that move real money for millions of customers
  • Go deep on the banking domain - payments, ledgers, and the rules beneath them - and use that understanding to question and sharpen what we build
  • Drive your own priorities within a cross-functional team, and unblock yourself when you hit a wall
  • Raise problems early with a proposed solution, instead of working around them
  • Ship incremental improvements and share your findings - including at Get Stuff Done Days

Requirements

  • Solid grasp of microservice architecture
  • Comfortable with relational databases, Postgres preferred
  • Experience operating in a modern cloud environment, ideally AWS and Kubernetes
  • Full professional proficiency in English
  • Event-driven systems with Kafka (nice to have)
  • Payments, ledgers, or other banking/fintech domain experience (nice to have)

Benefits

  • Competitive personal development budget
  • Work from home budget
  • Discounts to fitness & wellness memberships, language apps and public transportation
  • Premium subscription on personal N26 bank account, with subscriptions for friends and family
  • Additional day of annual leave for each year of service
  • Relocation package with visa support
