About The Role

We are looking for a Backend Engineer to build a fraud engine that will help us ship new products and features quickly while keeping risk and cost low. You will work closely with Product, Data Science, Fraud Prevention Analysts, and fraud agents to strike the right balance between scaling quickly and mitigating risk efficiently.

Team

The Acquiring Risk team is part of Acquiring Squad, in the Global Product tribe, dedicated to ensuring customers can receive money quickly and securely. We build smart fraud detection and prevention systems to stop scammers and fraudsters from exploiting Wise or defrauding our customers.

We prioritise projects using a mix of data and intuition, focus on good execution and learn from our mistakes.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a fraud engine that supports new products and features.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to balance speed, scalability, and risk mitigation.
  • Deliver high‑performance, low‑latency systems with scalability and reliability.
  • Own features from end to end and ensure strong product orientation.
  • Work with messaging systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ and relational databases (SQL).
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate within the team.

Qualifications

  • Hands‑on experience with distributed systems, microservices architecture, and backend services supporting large‑scale traffic.
  • Proven ability to deliver high‑performance, low‑latency systems focused on speed, scalability, and reliability.
  • Strong product‑oriented mindset with end‑to‑end ownership of features.
  • Proficiency in Java (preferred) or similar backend languages.
  • Familiarity with messaging systems such as Kafka or RabbitMQ and relational databases (SQL).
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, growth mindset, focus on delivering user and business value.

Nice To Have

  • Understanding of basic machine learning concepts and experience building data pipelines.
