Backend Engineer Senior/Mid
Summary
Senior backend engineer building the secure, multi-tenant trust layer for an AI-driven insurance claims platform in Python.
Senior Backend Engineer
Location: Remote
This role is for a senior backend engineer who can design and own the trust layer of an AI-native claims operation.
We want someone who is strong technically, communicates clearly, and has the judgment to make systems simpler, safer, and easier to evolve. Expect real ownership from system design through production — especially around multi-tenancy, access control, and regulated data.
You solve ambiguous problems by shaping the right architectural approach, then ship, iterate, and keep it healthy in production.
We build AI-native. Our agents handle claim logic; you own the system underneath — secure by design, multi-tenant, and compliant. Engineers use Codex, Claude Code, and agents they build themselves. We invest in harness engineering through skills, CLIs, logs, traces, and orchestration.
This is a role for someone in a high-growth chapter of their career, who wants to do the best work of their life, learn fast, and win as part of a team going all-in on a hard mission.
Location — Remote. International team; main office in Berlin. Expect async-first collaboration across time zones and occasional travel for onsites.
Why this role
You will own the application trust model behind our AI-native claims platform. While our agents decide what happens next on a claim, you make sure the system underneath is secure, multi-tenant, and compliant by design. You build the core services, the data model, and the partner-facing APIs that let insurers, property managers, and restoration companies work with claims in real time. High autonomy, small senior team — backend decisions directly shape how we handle regulated data.
What you will own
Design and ship backend services, APIs, data flows, and background processing for the claims platform
Own the canonical data model for claims, stakeholders, policies, and documents
Implement multi-tenancy and access control so every customer, partner, and user sees only what they should
Build secure, stable integrations to CRM/core systems and external partner APIs
Ensure GDPR-compliant data handling, isolation, and auditability across the stack
Turn vague requirements into concrete technical plans, trade-offs, and execution
Own services after launch: reliability, observability, performance, and incident follow-through
Instrument what you ship and use production signal to iterate — not just to keep the lights on
Design and maintain developer tooling, automated tests, and CI/CD pipelines
Work closely with AI, frontend, product, and ops to deliver end-to-end outcomes
Improve engineering leverage with AI tooling and automation, not AI as a gimmick
Raise the quality bar through code review, design review, and pragmatic technical leadership
What strong performance looks like
You reliably move important backend work forward without waiting to be tightly managed
Your systems are easier to operate and easier to change because of your design decisions
You make smart trade-offs to unblock shipping — and you stand by those decisions
Security and tenancy are baked into how you design, not bolted on later
You keep raising the bar on engineering excellence for yourself and everyone else
What we are looking for
Strong senior-level backend (or full-stack with deep backend ownership) experience in production systems — typically 3+ years with real product ownership
Strong Python and/or TypeScript skills; ability to design clean, maintainable backend code
Experience building or operating multi-tenant SaaS
Experience with authentication, authorization, and permissions models
Good distributed systems judgment: concurrency, failure handling, data consistency, async work, and service boundaries
Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
Comfort with database schema design and performance tuning for real-time / high-throughput scenarios
A security-conscious approach: enterprise-grade requirements, careful handling of sensitive data, and clear thinking about the security implications of systems and AI workflows
You design clean, stable APIs and know how to keep them backwards-compatible
You are used to CI/CD, automated testing, and shipping iteratively
Ability to go from problem statement to design to production rollout with real ownership
Clear written and verbal communication in English — you explain systems, trade-offs, and incidents without hiding behind jargon
Comfortable working remote in an international team: strong written communication, async habits, and proactive ownership without constant oversight
AI-native working style: you already use AI tools in your daily workflow, and you want to improve how the team builds — better tooling, workflows, and engineering leverage
