Description

Backend / Full-Stack Developer, AI-Assisted

Engineering (Next.js / Postgres)

Location: On-site, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig, Metro Manila, Philippines (hybrid possible later)
Type: Full-time

About the Role

FlightDeck is hiring full-stack developers to build our digital logbook platform for aviation on Next.js, TypeScript and PostgreSQL. You'll implement features with AI assistance, so alongside writing code yourself, the skill we value most is judgement: reviewing the code AI produces, deciding whether it is correct, secure and well-structured, and sending it back when it isn't. We care more about how you think than how long you've worked. If complex systems fascinate you rather than scare you, we want to talk to you. Most of our frontend already exists as functional mockups, so most of your work will focus on backend integration: connecting those screens to the data model and server logic behind them.

What You'll Do

Full-Stack Features

● Build features end to end in Next.js (App Router, React Server Components) and strict TypeScript: screens, server actions, the logic behind them and the tests that prove them.

● Work directly in PostgreSQL: schema changes as reviewed migrations, and queries scoped so every user sees only the records they're allowed to.

AI-Assisted Engineering

● Work together with AI coding agents (Claude Code) with the context a story needs, then judge the result: correctness, architecture, security and test quality.

● Review pull requests alongside our automated AI code review, and make sure each finding is resolved.

Harness & Quality

● Maintain the AI harness: the agent rules, review gates and guardrails kept in the repository. When an agent repeats a mistake, turn the lesson into a rule or an automated check.

● Write tests at the right layer (Vitest, Playwright) and verify every acceptance criterion on the pull request's own preview environment.

Data Model (growth track for one of you)

● Own the FlightDeck data model: keep the design record current, build tables with the stories that need them, and guard the access rules and audit trail behind regulated aviation records.

Collaboration

● Work closely with the product owners and the engineering team, largely asynchronously and in writing with our US-based founders; push back with reasons when a requirement or an agent's output doesn't hold up.

What You'll Bring

Required

● Hands-on experience building web applications in TypeScript and React, ideally with Next.js, whether from work, university or your own projects.

● Solid PostgreSQL and SQL: relational data modeling, keys and constraints, migrations.

● A genuine appetite for complexity: you enjoy taking apart a complex system until you understand how it really works.

● A real code-review instinct: you spot bugs, edge cases, security holes and structural problems in unfamiliar code.

● Good architectural understanding: where logic belongs, how layers depend on each other, and the trade-offs behind a design.

● Git and pull-request workflows, testing as a habit, and clear spoken and written English.

Nice to Have

● Hands-on use of Claude Code, Codex or a similar AI coding agent on real code.

● A TypeScript ORM; Postgres beyond CRUD (row-level security, schema evolution on a live database).

● Data modeling ownership in a previous role or project (for the data model track).

● A background in regulated, record-heavy domains (aviation, healthcare, finance), or an interest in aviation.

Education

● A university degree, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or a related field.

What We Offer

● Training & growth: hands-on training in directing and reviewing AI coding agents and in maintaining the AI harness; for one of you, ownership of the data model.

● A modern, greenfield stack: current Next.js, React and PostgreSQL

● Development tools: a MacBook Pro (M-series chip) and high-volume access to premium AI providers.

● Work environment: Modern and premium equipped office in BGC with daytime hours.

● Small team, real ownership: direct work with the founders of an international tech start-up, and room to grow as the company does.

● Benefits: Competitive Salary, based on experience, with room to grow. All govt Benefits inc SSS, PhilHealth and 13th month, HMO Health Benefit, 15 Days Paid Leave, Free Unlimited Mineral Water/Coffee in our office and a welcome pack.

Join FlightDeck and help build the logbook that keeps aviation's records straight.

About FlightDeck

FlightDeck is a US company building modern digital logbooks for aviation: for pilots, student pilots and flight instructors. Today much of that record-keeping still happens on paper. In FlightDeck, a flight or an instructor's signature is recorded once, signed, locked and traceable, and its owner controls who it is shared with. In a regulated domain, how the data is modeled and who may see it matters as much as the screens. We're pre-launch and building our development team in Manila, with our office in Bonifacio Global City.
