Backend Java Engineer
Summary
Principal Backend Engineer builds cloud-native Java/Spring Boot microservices on AWS for enterprise financial systems, shaping architecture and owning full delivery from infra to production.
We're partnered with a global financial services consulting firm seeking a Principal Backend Engineer with deep Java expertise to join their growing engineering practice in London.
Known for their entrepreneurial, non-hierarchical culture and high-impact delivery for Tier 1 financial institutions, this is a standout opportunity for a senior engineer ready to take technical ownership and shape architecture across complex, enterprise-scale systems - spanning both Financial Services and Energy.
You'll work across client-facing projects, building cloud-native backend solutions from the ground up, driving architecture decisions, and collaborating closely with product and engineering teams in agile squads.
What you'll be doing:
- Building scalable backend services and microservices using Java 11/17+ and Spring Boot
- Designing and delivering APIs for enterprise-grade systems
- Owning deployment on AWS - from infrastructure through to production - using CloudFormation and CI/CD best practice
- Shaping architecture discussions around microservices, event-driven, and CQRS patterns
- Defining robust testing strategies - unit, integration, and performance
- Troubleshooting distributed systems at scale, partnering closely with clients and cross-functional teams
What we're looking for:
- Strong hands-on expertise in Java 11/17+ and Spring Boot
- Proven experience with microservices, event-driven, and CQRS architectures
- Deep AWS knowledge, ideally with CloudFormation or similar IaC tools
- Comfort working across SQL and NoSQL databases
- Experience with Kafka and Java streaming
- A collaborative, agile mindset with strong distributed systems troubleshooting skills
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional)
- An appetite to mentor junior engineers and contribute beyond project delivery (thought leadership, RFPs, etc.)
