Backend Software Engineer

Summary

Develop and maintain backend services for IoT-enabled vending/storage systems, focusing on secure device communication via MQTT and REST APIs in Java.

Würth IT, a dynamic and forward-looking IT organization within the Würth Group, is expanding its global software development capabilities in Malaysia. As part of our worldwide IT network, you will work closely with colleagues in Europe and across the globe to deliver reliable, scalable and connected digital solutions for the Würth Group.

Within Würth IT, the Competence Center E-Business brings together several teams delivering digital solutions across the Würth environment. As part of its continued growth, Würth IT is extending these capabilities to Malaysia. Our team within this competence center focuses on the connected side of ORSY - Würth's range of vending machines and storage systems that enables customers to manage tools, fasteners and consumables directly at the point of use. We develop and maintain the IoT Cloud Connector, which remotely manages and monitors IoT-enabled ORSY devices, and the Service Center, a web application that customers use to configure and maintain their connected systems.

Job Description

As a Backend Software Engineer, you will develop and operate backend services that connect and manage IoT-enabled ORSY devices through our platform. Your work ensures that device data is exchanged, processed and validated reliably and securely.

You will collaborate closely with frontend, architecture, operations and support teams across locations to deliver and maintain end-to-end IoT solutions. A key part of your role is identifying optimization opportunities within the backend and implementing improvements in coordination with your technical lead.

This position requires structured problem-solving, a strong sense of ownership and the ability to work with a degree of independence within a global and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

Backend Development: Design, implement and optimize scalable REST APIs and microservices for IoT data exchange and device communication

IoT Communication: Implement and maintain event-based communication using MQTT and ensure reliable, secure transfer of IoT data in formats such as JSON and XML between devices, backend services and the platform.

Device Integration: Develop and operate backend services for the IoT Cloud Connector and support the integration of connected ORSY devices such as vending machines, RFID stations, weighing cabinets and sensor-based shelf systems into the backend platform.

Data Processing: Develop and improve strategies for the efficient processing, transformation and validation of IoT message streams and data formats.

Product Development: Work hands-on on new features, prototypes and key components of the IoT platform and contribute to the further development of the Service Center web application.

Platform Quality: Ensure performance, scalability and stability of backend services and continuously improve monitoring, logging and observability.

Optimization: Optimize message processing pipelines and backend processes with a focus on latency, throughput and cost efficiency.

Operations: Support the operation, maintenance and administration of connected ORSY systems and contribute to incident analysis and resolution.

Documentation: Maintain technical documentation, operational procedures and knowledge articles related to IoT backend services and connected device integrations.

Collaboration: Work closely with teams such as frontend, architecture, operations and support to deliver and operate end-to-end solutions across locations.

Domain Knowledge: Build up knowledge of the Würth business environment, in particular the connected vending and storage solutions within the ORSY ecosystem, to better understand customer needs and business context.

Growth: Build on your technical skills through advanced training and development opportunities to grow to your full potential within Würth IT.

Qualifications

Education: Completed degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or a comparable technical qualification; equivalent qualifications based on substantial practical experience are also considered.

Experience: More than 2 years of specific work experience in backend software development, with solid professional knowledge in at least one relevant subject area.

Backend Development: Hands-on experience with Java for developing backend services and REST APIs in a microservice architecture.

IoT & Messaging:Experience with event-driven communication and IoT messaging protocols, in particular MQTT; familiarity with message brokers such as HiveMQ or comparable technologies is an advantage.

Data Handling: Solid understanding of data exchange formats such as JSON and XML and experience with processing, transformation and validation of structured data in distributed systems.

Cloud & Infrastructure: Familiarity with cloud platforms, container technologies and CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Kubernetes, Azure, Docker, Azure DevOps or comparable).

Quality Practices: Understanding of software quality practices including automated testing, code review and secure software development.

Independence: Ability to work with a degree of independence, recognise optimisation opportunities within the subject area and implement improvements in coordination with the technical lead.

Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and structured problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret technical issues in distributed, connected systems.

Communication: Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with international, cross-functional teams in a global environment.

Language:Excellent English is required for global collaboration; German language skills can be an advantage.

Domain Knowledge:Experience with IoT platforms, connected devices or industrial vending and storage systems is an advantage but not a prerequisite - curiosity and willingness to build domain knowledge in this area are equally valued.

Travel: Willingness to collaborate closely with global teams, including occasional onsite exchanges at Würth IT sites for onboarding and team workshops
