BIM Coordinator
Description
SUMMARY
DI exists to relieve the world of mediocre experiences and to create remarkable ones. Our people make the remarkable possible through an unwavering display of uncommon commitment each day.
Reporting to the Engineering Manager and VP, Director of Engineering, the BIM Coordinator is accountable for coordinating how a project’s exhibit design interfaces with the host building. This role bridges DI’s internal design and engineering teams and the external parties responsible for the building: the Architect of Record (AOR), Structural Engineer of Record (SEOR), General Contractor (GC), and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Working alongside assigned Lead Engineers and Project Managers, the BIM Coordinator owns facility-interface coordination from early design through installation. On heavily integrated projects, this person serves as DI’s direct point of contact with the AOR, GC, and SEOR.
The BIM Coordinator builds and maintains a federated coordination model that combines exhibit and building models into a shared reference for design coordination with the architect and construction coordination with the general contractor.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/FUNCTIONS may include but are not limited to:
Facility Interface & Coordination
-
Serve as the primary point of contact for facility-interface questions on assigned projects, supporting the Lead Engineer and Project Manager without assuming their overall project ownership.
-
Communicate directly with the Architect of Record, General Contractor, and SEOR on heavily integrated projects, as determined case by case.
-
Translate internal design intent from SketchUp/Rhino concept and schematic models, along with SolidWorks engineering production models and drawings, into formats suitable for coordination with external project partners.
-
Obtain the Architect of Record’s base-building model in Revit or IFC format and combine it with DI’s design and engineering models using shared coordinates to establish an accurate, in-context reference for facility coordination.
Model Coordination & Clash Detection
-
Maintain the federated coordination model through design and construction, incorporating revisions from DI teams and updated architectural models as they are issued.
-
Perform clash detection to identify conflicts between exhibit elements and the building’s structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems before fabrication or installation begins.
-
Coordinate resolution of identified conflicts with DI teams, the Architect of Record, and the General Contractor before work reaches the field, reducing rework, change orders, and contractor claims.
-
Produce facility-interface drawings defining requirements such as in-wall blocking, footings, and overhead anchoring.
-
Coordinate exhibit power and data requirements with design, engineering, and the AV/technology team, and communicate those requirements to the facility’s project team.
Permitting, Submittals & RFI Support
-
Prepare concise, accurate permit drawing packages for building department submittal, scoped to the requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
-
Respond to plan review comments and work with the AHJ to clarify or resolve comments that fall outside the project scope.
-
Prepare and track submittals to the Architect of Record and General Contractor, including shop drawings, product data, and deferred submittals for exhibit structural elements.
-
Support the Project Manager and Lead Engineer by drafting RFIs to the Architect of Record and General Contractor and preparing responses to incoming project RFIs. The Project Manager retains ownership of RFI tracking.
Additional Responsibilities Based on Experience
- Experience in the following areas is preferred but is not required for consideration.
Structural Scope Triage
-
Review design elements against DI’s structural triage criteria to identify items that are likely exempt from structural engineering review and those likely to require a stamped PE/SE calculation package for gravity/live loads, seismic bracing, or wind loads, depending on the venue and jurisdiction.
-
Define the scope of required structural engineering packages, initiate the process, and route items to DI’s engineering team or an outside PE/SE as appropriate.
-
Transmit load information to the facility’s SEOR for confirmation that the host building can accept the added loads.
-
Coordinate the determination of which elements require stamped calculations and manage that process. This role does not replace a licensed PE/SE or stamp calculations.
-
Review attachment methods, including anchors, fasteners, and mounting details, to ensure they are properly specified for the intended use.
Estimating & Preliminary Engineering Support Across Practices
-
Review large fabrication packages received from outside design firms to identify elements that will require structural engineering and the likely permitting requirements for the relevant jurisdiction.
-
Develop a preliminary assessment of the engineering approach to support pricing before detailed engineering begins.
-
Assist DI’s engineering team with preliminary structural assessment and review before scope moves to estimating or early base-building coordination with the architect or General Contractor.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
-
Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) construction documents.
-
Proficiency working across design software such as SketchUp and Rhino and engineering/production software such as SolidWorks.
-
Ability to build and maintain federated coordination models and perform clash detection, including importing and aligning third-party architectural models in Revit or IFC format using platforms such as Autodesk Forma, Speckle, or similar tools.
-
Proficiency producing 2D permit and facility-interface drawings using CAD software such as AutoCAD or Revit.
-
Knowledge of RFI and submittal workflows, construction-phase plan review, and permitting processes.
-
Understanding of the full project lifecycle, from design and engineering through fabrication and installation.
-
Ability to coordinate effectively with architects, general contractors, structural engineers of record, building officials, and internal project teams.
Preferred Additional Knowledge
-
Familiarity with attachment and anchoring methods for building interfaces, including post-installed anchors, blocking, and overhead supports.
-
Working knowledge of building codes and structural load concepts, including IBC and ASCE 7 requirements for gravity/live, seismic, and wind loads, sufficient to support structural scope triage.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE
Required
-
Bachelor’s degree in architecture, structural engineering, construction management, or a related field.
-
Experience coordinating directly with architects, general contractors, and/or structural engineers of record on construction or fabrication projects.
-
Experience supporting the RFI process and construction-phase plan review or permitting activities.
Preferred
-
Experience in exhibit fabrication, museum or cultural institution construction, themed entertainment, or a related built-environment field.
Licensure
-
Architectural licensure and PE/SE licensure are not required for this role.
