Working in a beautiful waterfront setting, you will collaborate with fellow boating staff to teach campers esential boating skills and knoweldge. by mainting a safe and supportive enrivonment, you will help instill a love for water-based activities, all while ensuring a positive, enriching camp experience for every camper. Primary responsibilities include, and are not limited to:

  • Supervise and organize the Boating area to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all campers
  • Plan and implement age-appropriate lessons and activities to help campers develop their boating skills
  • Ensure the safety of all campers and staff by enforcing water safety guidelines and providing proper equipment and supervision, ensuring safety and confidence on the water
  • Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of boating equipment and facilities, ensuring they are in excellent condition
  • Collaborate with other camp staff to incorporate boating activities into the broader camp program
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment, promoting teamwork, respect, and personal growth among campers and staff
  • Join all staff in the parking lot in the morning and afternoon to welcome the safe arrival and departure of campers
  • Role will also include planning and leading an activity, or help with a cookout, one or two evenings (after regular camp hours) throughout the course of the summer

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervise campers and counselors during their boating activity sessions, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all
  • Oversee the setup, operation, and ongoing safety of the Boating area, maintaining a secure environment at all times
  • Ensure the area is organized and properly stocked with the necessary equipment for all activities
  • Foster and maintain positive working relationships with boating, waterfront, and camp staff to ensure smooth collaboration and communication.

  • Actively participate as an essential team member and attend all staff meetings during or after camp as required

  • Complete all staff payroll and onboarding on time and before Orientation begins
  • Complete all pre-camp asynchronous on-line training modules and attend all pre-camp in-person orientation sessions

JOB DETAILS: We are an outdoor camp, located on beautiful, wooded property in Dover, MA. This is an hourly position, Monday - Friday, for the camp season*. The regular Camp day begins when you arrive at Camp (typically between 8:45 and 9:15) and ends at 4pm. In addition, all Boating Specialists are expected to attend 3 or 4 staff meetings on Monday evenings at JCC Greater Boston. Boating Specialists also work 1 or 2 additional evenings and/or overnights (meals provided!) over the course of the summer - depending on their placement in camp. Offering great perks, including JCC Health & Fitness center access, a supportive, vibrant in-person work environment, and a competitive starting pay rate of $16 - $19 per hour. The pay rate offered will ultimately be determined by relevant qualifications, experience and JCC's internal equity.

*The regular camp season begins June 29 and ends August 21 (with the option to also work the following “9th Week”). Orientation takes place (in-person and with different hours and no transportation provided) the week of June 22nd and ends with Visiting Day (a pre-camp visit for all campers and families to meet staff) on Sunday, June 28. While we prefer staff who can start Orientation Week and work the entire 8-week regular season, we are happy to consider quality candidates who may have conflicting obligations.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • High school graduates* strongly preferred
  • Experience leading children in your subject area is a plus, but not necessarily required
  • Experience working in and/or attending summer camp is a plus

*An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet minimum criteria.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Positive, enthusiastic attitude with a strong passion for working with children in an outdoor setting.
  • Knowledge and experience in non-motorized boating (canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding) and boating safety.
  • Models maturity and reliability with the ability to stay playful – exhibiting flexibility, patience, innovative problem solving and collaboration
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and teamwork skills, with the ability to multitask and manage situations calmly, effectively, and diplomatically.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, building and sustaining strong relationships with campers, staff, and fellow team members.
  • Prior experience working with children, preferably in a camp or similar outdoor setting.
  • Strong proficiency in boating activities, with an understanding of safety protocols and techniques.
  • Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Lifeguarding (or willingness to obtain certifications before employment).
  • Ability to provide clear, effective instruction to campers of all ages and skill levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining safety standards in a waterfront environment
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with campers and fellow staff.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to work in-person, on-site in Dover, Massachusetts
  • Must be able to navigate 70 acres of rugged, uneven and rustic campgrounds independently
  • Comfortable working all or most of the day outdoors or inside without air conditioning
  • Able to work well in a busy, dynamic and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities
  • Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 30-40 pounds (boxes of supplies, children’s backpacks etc.)
  • Able to sit and kneel; getting down at eye level with children regularly.
