Boiler Operator
Summary
Operate and maintain high-pressure steam boilers, clean steam generators, and water systems in a 24/7 facility, performing inspections, adjustments, and minor repairs while monitoring a Building Management System.
Achieve safe operations of the facility while maintaining continuous (24/7) operations of the gas High pressure steam boilers, water systems and clean steam generators.
Shift: 12-Hour Pitman Shift Schedule, 6pm-6am.
- Perform monthly boiler room facility inspections and make sure the boiler feed water chemistry is correct.
- Read meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.
- Record data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases, voltage load and generator balance.
- Adjust manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment.
- Visually inspect equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.
- Maintain equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, sight glass, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components.
- Oil and lubricate equipment.
- Record operation and maintenance actions taken during shift in operator's logbook.
- Perform minor preventative maintenance on plant equipment such as the water systems, steam generators, air compressors, chillers and pumps, which require medium to heavy lifting.
- Building Management System (BMS)
- Monitor critical equipment for environmental alerts and alarms
- Inform equipment owner and facilities supervisor of alarms
- Decipher BMS data to identify root causes of alarms
- Assist in managing contracted work performed in Boiler Rm and Critical Utility Rm.
Minor Maintenance includes, but is not limited to:
- Change gauges (temperature, pressure, etc.) within the plant
- Remove and replace electric motors and belts
- Remove and replace filters, oils and other lubricating fluids on all plant equipment
- Remove and replace gaskets
- Remove and replace valves within the plant
- Install pipe plugs as needed
- Clean Boiler Room, and Critical Utilities Room (pick up trash, take out trash, and mop)
- Clean out level sight glasses on all boilers
- Change out control valves as needed
- Secure all types off tubing and piping as needed
- Paint equipment as needed
- Change out light bulbs and must be able to climb ladders.
- Replace fuses
- Assist Lead Boiler Operator as needed.
- Run and Maintain the Plant Water System while on-shift
- Run and Maintain the Plant Air Compressors while on-shift
- Utilize Building Management System for Alarm Reporting and Response
High school degree, State of New Jersey High Pressure Black Seal Boiler License required, with a minimum of 3 years of relevant gas boiler operation experience; or equivalent combination of advanced education and experience. Experience in an aseptic/pharmaceutical packaging environment preferred. High integrity and self-motivated individual who is a team player with physical perceptive skills
