Position Summary

SouthStar Energy Services (SSE) is seeking a Business Analyst II, III, or Sr (Trading Control) to support its Trading Control and Middle Office function within Retail Risk Management. This position provides independent oversight of trading activity by validating transactions, monitoring risk exposures, supporting daily valuation and reporting processes, and maintaining operational controls. The analyst acts as an independent control point between Trading, Accounting, and Operations, helping ensure the accuracy of trade capture, pricing, valuation, and risk reporting within the following marketings, FL, GA, IL, MI, OH and PA.

The position can be hired as an Analyst II (Grade Level 3), Analyst III (Grade Level 4), and Analyst Sr (Grade Level 5). Individuals who demonstrate advanced skills in terms of work experience, education and certifications may be eligible for the more advanced position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Trade Control & Validation

  • Review and validate physical and financial commodity transactions.

  • Ensure trades are accurately captured within Energy Trading and Risk Management system and supporting databases.

  • Reconcile trade activity between front-office systems, confirmations, and downstream stakeholders.

  • Investigate and resolve trade discrepancies and control exceptions.

  • Confirmations & Operational Controls

    • Support trade verification, confirmation processing, and exception resolution.
    • Verify trading activity complies with approved contracts and transaction terms.
    • Maintain documentation supporting audit, regulatory, and compliance requirements.
    • Assist with SOX control execution and evidence retention activities.
  • Risk Reporting & Exposure Monitoring

    • Support preparation of daily and monthly risk reports, including position, exposure, and mark-to-market reporting.

    • Support monitoring of risk limits, position thresholds, and policy compliance requirements.

    • Assist with scenario analysis, stress testing, and exposure monitoring activities.

    • Escalate unusual exposures, valuation concerns, or control issues to management.

  • Systems & Data Integrity

    • Maintain data quality controls related to transactions, pricing curves, and valuation inputs.

    • Perform reconciliations and control checks to ensure reporting accuracy.

    • Support testing and implementation of ETRM enhancements and system upgrades.

    • Participate in process automation and reporting improvement initiatives.

  • Cross-Functional Support

    • Partner with Trading, Accounting, Operations, Legal, and Technology teams to resolve operational issues.

    • Support internal and external audits as required.

    • Provide analysis and insights related to market exposure and transaction activity.

Analyst II (Grade 3)

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, Business, or a related field.

Required Experience

  • 0-3 years of experience supporting commodity trading, risk management, settlements, middle-office operations, financial analysis, accounting, or related analytical functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic understanding of commodity trading, risk management, and settlement processes.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to interpret financial and operational data.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Exposure to reporting and visualization tools such as Power BI.
  • Familiarity with energy markets, trading organizations, or financial controls.

Analyst III (Grade 4)

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, Business, or a related field.

Required Experience

  • 4-9 years of experience supporting commodity trading, risk management, settlements, middle-office operations, trading controls, accounting, or related analytical functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of commodity trading, risk management, and settlement processes.
  • Experience analyzing trading activity and validating financial and operational data.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and reporting tools.
  • Experience with Power BI, database reporting tools, or similar analytics platforms.
  • Ability to identify discrepancies, investigate issues, and recommend solutions.
  • Knowledge of internal controls, governance practices, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience collaborating with traders, accounting, risk management, and commercial teams.
  • Working knowledge of energy markets and trading operations.

Analyst Sr (Grade 5)

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, Business, or a related field.

Required Experience

  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience supporting commodity trading, risk management, settlements, middle-office operations, trading controls, accounting, or related analytical functions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of commodity trading, risk management, settlement processes, and trading controls.
  • Extensive experience analyzing complex trading and financial data to identify trends, risks, and control issues.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and advanced analytics/reporting tools.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, governance frameworks, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading investigations, resolving complex issues, and implementing process improvements.
  • Advanced knowledge of energy markets, trading operations, and commercial business practices.
  • Ability to serve as a subject matter expert and mentor less experienced analysts.
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders and lead cross-functional initiatives that improve control effectiveness and operational efficiency.

Location and Work Environment:

This position is based at SouthStar’s corporate office in Atlanta, Georgia, with a hybrid work schedule of four days in-office and one day remote per week (subject to change per business needs). The work environment is dynamic, fast-paced, and challenging with competing demands.
