Business Analyst
Summary
Business Analyst based in Dunedin at MTF Finance, responsible for requirements gathering, process mapping, and stakeholder engagement to drive software delivery and business process improvements.
About us:
At MTF, our mission is to help New Zealanders get ahead by making lending about people again. We’re New Zealand’s money experts helping locals all over New Zealand, powered by a world-class funding system.
100% New Zealand owned and operated since 1970, MTF provides personal and business loans to New Zealanders through our nationwide network, made up of 55 Franchises and more than 150 vehicle dealers and business partners. We’ve grown to be one of New Zealand’s largest specialist lenders, with assets of more than $1.2B.
There is a strong sense of pride in the work we do. We have a love for our Dunedin heritage but we’re a national business, and a team, who reach communities and customers right across the country
When you join MTF, you join a dynamic, innovative and highly trusted team. Whether you join our National Office, or one of our franchises, you’re joining a team who share a deep passion for the communities we serve and doing the best for our customers, while also having an unwavering commitment to help our own people learn, grow, and thrive.
About the role:
Ready to turn curiosity into impact? We’re looking for a Business Analyst to join our Dunedin based team and help shape smart, practical change across MTF. Whether you’re a recent graduate ready to launch your career or you bring analysis experience and want your next challenge, this is a great opportunity to learn, contribute and grow with a proudly New Zealand-owned business.
In this role, you’ll work with people from across the business to understand problems, explore opportunities and turn ideas into clear requirements that our delivery teams can design, build and test from. You’ll get involved in workshops, interviews, process mapping, option analysis, user stories and acceptance criteria with support, coaching and room to build your confidence as you go.
If you’re naturally curious, enjoy connecting the dots, and like working with people to solve real business problems, we’d love to hear from you. Experience in business analysis, technology, finance, customer operations or process improvement would be helpful — but a great attitude, strong communication skills and a willingness to learn are just as important.
You’ll be based at our National Office in Dunedin, working alongside a collaborative team that supports our franchise and vehicle dealer networks across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Just some of the things you’re responsible for:
Discovery and problem analysis
- Plan and run your own elicitation, workshops and interviews for small to medium work, adapting your questions and managing stakeholder input without support.
- Frame contained problems, and analyse options against defined criteria so decision makers can choose with confidence.
- Analyse cross-functional business processes end to end, identify improvement opportunities and make practical recommendations.
- Produce process flows, use cases and simple data or domain models for your own work.
Requirements definition and management
- Define and manage requirements end to end for small to medium change, with acceptance criteria linked to clear business outcomes.
- Define and document business rules, policies and procedures, and keep them traceable through delivery.
- Represent the user in delivery decisions, and work with design on journeys and pain points.
- Ensure requirements reflect MTF’s regulatory and compliance obligations, including responsible lending, CCCFA and AML/CFT where relevant.
Software delivery
- Work effectively as a member of a delivery team, adapting your analysis to how the team delivers.
- Work alongside engineers, designers and product managers to shape and assess solution options.
- Plan and carry out test activities for your own work, including UAT, and confirm that what was delivered matches what was intended.
- Support implementation readiness – process change, training material and go-live checks.
Systems and data analysis
- Analyse how MTF’s systems support a business process, and document data flows and interfaces with support from engineers.
- Interrogate and interpret data to test assumptions and support requirements, working with engineers and reporting tools where direct query access is needed.
- Surface downstream impacts, risks and dependencies early.
Stakeholder engagement and communication
- Own the stakeholder relationships for the work assigned to you, and keep people informed on progress, risks and decisions.
- Communicate analysis, options and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Constructively challenge assumptions, unclear requirements and solution bias while maintaining strong working relationships.
Domain knowledge and continuous improvement
- Apply working knowledge of MTF’s products, customers, franchise network and regulatory environment to your analysis.
- Contribute to improving MTF’s analysis practice – templates, standards and ways of working.
- Use AI and automation practically to lift the quality and pace of analysis, documentation and testing.
- Support junior analysts by sharing what you know and reviewing their work where asked.
You’ll need to have:
- Curiosity and problem framing – works to understand the real business problem, context and constraints before moving to solution mode.
- Structured thinking – connects evidence to recommendations and produces analysis that supports better decisions.
- Stakeholder empathy and collaboration – builds trust with business, technical and customer-facing stakeholders.
- Courage to constructively challenge assumptions, weak evidence and unclear requirements.
- Ownership and delivery focus – follows through on issues and escalates early.
- Effective written and oral communication with technical and non-technical audiences.
What you’ll receive in return:
- Enjoy a culture that celebrates success – regular office celebrations, shouts and our incentive schemes reward both individual achievements and business outcomes.
- Join a dynamic, collaborative team in a modern, central office where people genuinely enjoy working together and take pride in being MTFers.
- Work in a supportive, vibrant environment where teamwork, accountability, and delivering on commitments come first.
- Take advantage of ongoing development opportunities, coaching, and mentorship to help you grow your skills and career.
- Receive a competitive remuneration package, including medical insurance, performance incentives, flexible leave options, and other great benefits.
