Mōhiotanga Pakihi: Business Intelligence
Data is key for TEC. Data and Digital Development establishes and manages the data pipeline from data collections to data development and insights to support the core business systems to the level required by TEC and partner organisations. Data and Digital Development is comprised of five teams grouped in centres of excellence: Data Collection, Data Development, Business Intelligence, Data Science and Web Development.
The Business Intelligence team contributes to a data-driven culture that adds value to TEC's business. It is focused on the delivery of business intelligence products, that create valuable insights to influence the decision making of TEC's businesses.
He angitūtanga: About the Role
Reporting to the Team Leader - Business Intelligence, this fixed-term role through till 30 June 2027 will contribute directly to developing and delivering enterprise Power BI reports and semantic models. The role is based in Wellington, New Zealand, and is classified at the Intermediate level in line with the job description
We are looking for an experienced BI Developer who can become productive quickly, work effectively within an established BI environment, and deliver high-quality reporting solutions that provide clear insights and support decision-making across TEC.
- Develop and enhance enterprise Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models that support TEC's core business functions and partner organisations.
- Work within TEC's established BI architecture, standards, and delivery processes to become productive quickly and contribute to current reporting priorities.
- Translate business requirements into clear, practical, and user-focused reporting solutions.
- Apply effective data visualisation and storytelling techniques so reports communicate insights clearly and consistently.
- Build and optimise data models, DAX measures, and Power Query transformations to support report performance, maintainability, and usability.
- Collaborate with BI team members, data specialists, and business stakeholders to deliver agreed outcomes within timeframes.
He kōrero mōu: What we are looking for:
Because this is a fixed-term opportunity, we are looking for an experienced BI Developer who can quickly understand our environment and make an immediate contribution to Power BI report development.
You will be comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced enterprise BI setting and bring strong communication, customer focus, and the ability to deliver practical solutions with limited ramp-up time.
You will bring:
- Proven experience developing, maintaining, and enhancing enterprise Power BI reports, dashboards, and semantic models.
- Strong practical skills in data modelling, DAX, Power Query,
- Experience working in a governed enterprise BI environment with shared data sources, reusable semantic models, security controls, and structured deployment processes.
- The ability to understand an existing BI environment quickly, work independently when required, and deliver outcomes within short timeframes.
- Good development practices, including testing, documentation, version control, peer review, and deployment through agreed release processes.
- The ability to work with business users to clarify reporting requirements and translate them into reliable, practical BI solutions.
- Experience delivering work using agile ways of working.
- Experience with enterprise data platforms such as Databricks, SQL Server, or similar sources.
- Experience with Qlik Sense Enterprise would also be beneficial, particularly for supporting existing reports or assisting with migration to Power BI.
