Camp Activity Specialist -lifeguard NH/Hamden (Camp Mountain Laurel)

The Hamden/North Haven family Y, is seeking dedicated and safety-conscious Activity Specialist/Lifeguards to join our team! As a Lifeguard, you will play a key role in ensuring the safety of all participants, maintaining a welcoming and positive aquatic environment, and upholding YMCA standards. The lifeguard position ensures aquatic safety through vigilant surveillance, rule enforcement, and prompt response
to emergencies. Completes required certifications, in-service trainings, and facility checks.

Key Responsibilities:

• Ensure safe swimming conditions by maintaining constant visual attention and remaining alert while on duty.
• Enforce all YMCA policies, rules, and safety regulations to prevent accidents and promote a safe environment.
• Respond immediately and effectively to emergency situations, performing first aid and CPR as needed.
• Conduct routine pool and equipment checks, ensuring proper cleanliness and safety standards.
• Engage with members and promote YMCA aquatic programs and services.
• Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions to maintain skill proficiency.
• Serve as an ambassador for the YMCA, fostering a supportive and inclusive community.

• Minimum age of 16 years old.
• Lifeguard Certification (YMCA, Red Cross, or equivalent) required.
• Must hold and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
• Ability to pass a swimming and physical skills test upon hire and annually.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Physically capable of prolonged periods in the water and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Trainings & Certifications

• Must complete online New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Mandated Reporter, Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, and Employee Safety trainings prior to start of position.
• Must complete department onboarding within the first 90-days of employment.
• Must hold and maintain American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent lifeguard certification, CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications – required for job placement.
• Must complete Emergency Oxygen Administration Certification within the first 90 days of employment.
