We’re a high-save organization helping nearly 34,000 animals in our community each year and caring for approximately 10,000 across both of our campuses. Through sheltering, adoptions, community-centered programs and services we help find pets loving homes and keep them there. We are seeking an experienced Carson Shelter Manager to join our team at our Carson Campus. In this role, you’ll provide daily care, support positive outcomes, and help match pets with the families who will love them for life.

This leadership role requires a minimum of three years of experience in a supervisory or management capacity within an animal shelter. Candidates must demonstrate proven success leading teams and multiple departments in a high-volume, open-admission or similarly complex environment, with strong experience in staff development, employee relations, operational oversight, and ethical, humane decision-making. A strong working knowledge of animal welfare standards, shelter operations, canine behavior and training principles, along with excellent organizational and communication skills, physical ability to perform shelter duties, and flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and emergencies, is required.

Base Pay Range:

Base pay range is calculated by position title, and experience. It is determined within the departmental budget. Changes to the range are approved by the CEO.

As the Carson Campus Manager, you play a vital role in advancing Nevada Humane Society’s mission to care for pets, find them homes, and save lives. This role provides leadership and oversight of Carson City campus operations, ensuring high standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and team performance. You partner with authorized personnel to make sound employment decisions aligned with organizational goals, while fostering a positive, mission-driven workplace. Through strong leadership, you drive operational excellence, community partnerships, and outcomes in animal care.

Position-Specific Responsibilities

  1. Oversee all Carson Campus operations to ensure efficient, compliant, and high-quality service delivery across intake, animal flow, and outcomes, maintaining consistent adherence to operational standards and appropriate population levels.
  2. Drive performance outcomes including length of stay, return-to-owner rate, and adoption success, achieving established organizational goals and demonstrating continuous improvement.
  3. Collaborate with the Animal Care Director to implement and maintain best practices in animal care and population management, ensuring consistency in care standards and reduction in preventable issues.
  4. Ensure humane treatment, proper housing, sanitation, enrichment, and daily monitoring of all animals, maintaining high standards of care and strong overall animal welfare outcomes.
  5. Collaborate closely with all departments across the organization to ensure timely access to care, consistent application of medical protocols, effective disease prevention and management, and clear, coordinated progression of animals along appropriate outcome pathways toward adoption, transfer, or return-to-owner.
  6. Enforce disease prevention, cleaning protocols, and safety standards, maintaining a healthy environment and minimizing illness and safety concerns.
  7. Ensure compliance with Carson City Municipal Code, Nevada Revised Statutes, and all applicable regulations, maintaining strong inspection outcomes and regulatory alignment.
  8. Recruit, hire, train, and develop staff, maintaining a stable, well-trained team and appropriate staffing levels.
  9. Manage employee performance through coaching, evaluations, and corrective action, supporting staff development and addressing performance concerns effectively.
  10. Provide and oversee high-quality, compassionate customer service, ensuring positive experiences and timely, professional resolution of concerns.
  11. Support community engagement, volunteer programs, and partnerships, strengthening participation and enhancing community relationships.
  12. Oversee facility cleanliness, inventory, and resources, ensuring a safe, organized, and welcoming environment with adequate supplies and well-maintained equipment.
  13. Provides direct supervision, leadership, coaching, and performance management for Humane Enforcement Officers and related personnel.
  14. Review enforcement activities, reports, and case outcomes to ensure consistency, professionalism, and adherence to established procedures.
  15. Collaborates with municipal partners, law enforcement agencies, and other stakeholders regarding animal control and humane enforcement services.
  16. Assists in the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of NHS humane enforcement policies, procedures, and operational practices.
  17. Represents the organization at community meetings, public events, and stakeholder engagements, deliver presentations and communicating of organizational programs, services, and initiatives.
  18. Collaborate with the CFO to manage and monitor the campus budget, ensuring responsible use of resources and alignment with financial expectations.
  19. Maintain accurate records, reporting, and system utilization, ensuring reliable data, timely reporting, and ongoing operational improvements.
