CDL Class A Driver
Mission Statement
The CDL Class A Driver is responsible for safely and efficiently transporting raw materials, packaging components, finished products, equipment, and other company property between Merit Manufacturing facilities, customers, suppliers, and vendors.
This role is the connection between Merit and the people who depend on us. The CDL Class A Driver keeps freight moving, deliveries on schedule, and customers confident that their products and materials will arrive safely, accurately, and on time.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate assigned Class A commercial motor vehicles on local and regional routes.
- Complete scheduled pickups and deliveries accurately and on time.
- Perform required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Inspect tractors, trailers, tires, lights, brakes, and load-securement equipment.
- Confirm freight is properly loaded, distributed, secured, and protected before departure.
- Assist with loading, unloading, pallet movement, and shipment staging when required.
- Maintain accurate bills of lading, delivery receipts, signatures, mileage, fuel, inspection, and transportation records.
- Maintain accurate duty-status records and follow applicable hours-of-service requirements.
- Follow assigned routes and communicate traffic, weather, mechanical, scheduling, or delivery delays promptly.
- Keep assigned vehicles and trailers clean, organized, secure, and ready for operation.
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers, suppliers, vendors, and receiving teams.
- Immediately report accidents, citations, cargo damage, spills, equipment defects, or safety concerns.
- Support Warehouse, Shipping, Receiving, Fulfillment, and other operational activities as assigned.
- Follow all applicable company, DOT, and FMCSA safety and transportation requirements.
Qualifications
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License required.
- Acceptable motor vehicle record and continued eligibility to operate company commercial vehicles.
- Ability to maintain applicable DOT medical qualification.
- Ability to satisfy applicable FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse, testing, and driver-qualification requirements.
- Working knowledge of commercial vehicle inspections, load securement, delivery documentation, and safe-driving practices.
- Ability to understand road signs, safety instructions, shipping documents, and required transportation records.
- Strong communication, organization, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
- Professional and customer-focused attitude.
- Dependable attendance and the ability to work independently.
- Ability to adjust to changing routes, delivery times, and operational priorities.
Experience
- At least one year of Class A commercial driving, freight-delivery, or transportation experience preferred.
- Local or regional delivery experience preferred.
- Warehouse, shipping and receiving, or material-handling experience is a plus.
- Experience operating pallet jacks, forklifts, or Hi-Lo equipment is preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to sit and drive for extended periods.
- Ability to frequently enter and exit tractors, trailers, loading docks, and warehouse areas.
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to bend, reach, climb, push, pull, and handle freight safely.
- Ability to work around moving vehicles, warehouse traffic, forklifts, loading equipment, and production operations.
- Ability to work outdoors and drive in varying traffic and weather conditions.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
- Availability for early starts, extended workdays, overtime, and occasional weekend work based on operational needs.
