Your Career Path: Four Levels of CDL Class A Drivers

At SimsHD, we believe in career paths and growing our talent. That's why we have four levels of CDL Class A Drivers, each with its own wage band and a clear path to the next.

• Level 1 — Entry-Level / Apprentice Driver 0–2 years of commercial driving. Drive under the supervision of a senior driver while you learn heavy-haul safety, load securement and compliance.

• Level 2 — Independent Driver : 2–4 years of heavy-haul driving. Run assigned hauls on your own, secure loads to FMCSA standards and plan routes with Dispatch.

• Level 3 — Advanced Driver : 5–8+ years of heavy-haul experience. Lead complex and oversize moves, coordinate multi-truck crews, order permits and mentor newer drivers.

• Level 4 — Master Driver : 10+ years of oversize load experience. Serve as our subject-matter expert, lead high-risk operations and train drivers at every level.

Drivers move up as they build skills and show results: completing training safely, executing independently, leading jobs, and finally leading as a subject-matter expert. Level 3 and 4 drivers can also grow into Lead Driver and Supervisor roles.

What You'll Do

Your exact responsibilities depend on your level. Across the team, SimsHD drivers:

• Operate company trucks and trailers hauling oversized and overweight industrial loads.

• Perform and document pre-trip, en-route and post-trip inspections.

• Secure loads to FMCSA standards using chains, binders and straps.

• Follow all DOT regulations, including hours-of-service and ELD requirements.

• Plan routes with Dispatch, accounting for load size, permits and restrictions.

• Communicate clearly with Dispatch, customers, escorts, riggers and site crews.

• At senior levels: order oversize load permits, lead multi-truck moves, and mentor and train other drivers.

What We're Looking For

Required

• Valid CDL Class A license.

• Current DOT medical card.

• Clean MVR, and ability to pass drug and alcohol screening and a background check.

• Ability to meet site-specific access requirements (such as TWIC) when needed.

What helps you start at a higher level

• Heavy-haul, flatbed or lowboy driving experience.

• Oversize load knowledge, including what defines an oversize load.

• Experience ordering oversize load permits.

• A proven safety record, and experience mentoring or training other drivers.

The kind of driver who thrives here

• Puts safety first: completes every inspection and never moves a load that isn't safe.

• Keeps logs, inspections and reports accurate and honest.

• Shows up on time, prepared, and represents SimsHD professionally on customer sites.

• Drives courteously on public roads and works well with crews and teammates.

• Wants to keep learning and work toward the next level.

Working Conditions

• Work in the yard, on the road and at customer job sites, including active industrial plants and construction sites.

• Outdoor work in heat, cold, rain and noise. Required PPE includes hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves and high-vis.

• Able to lift up to 50 lb, climb on and off trucks and trailers, and handle chains, binders and straps.
