Description

Role & responsibilities

1. Design and implement a finite-volume (FVM) CFD solver in modern C++ (C++17/20) on unstructured meshes.

2. Implement pressure-velocity coupling (SIMPLE / SIMPLEC / PISO) for steady and transient, incompressible and compressible flows.

3. Implement turbulence models: k-, k- SST, Spalart-Allmaras, with wall functions.

4. Implement conjugate heat transfer (fluid + solid conduction), convection, and coupling with radiation (P1 / DOM source terms).

5. Develop exhaust plume and species transport models: plume rise, dispersion, temperature decay and mixing under different wind conditions.

6. Implement boundary conditions for ship operating conditions: 030 knots, 25/50/100% engine load, wind, solar heating and sea-state inputs.

7. Parallelise the solver with MPI and OpenMP; integrate PETSc or hypre linear solvers; optimise for multi-million-cell meshes on workstations and HPC clusters.

8. Write readers for CGNS and ANSYS Fluent mesh/case/data files (.msh, .cas, .dat), and export results to the IR module (HDF5).

9. Run verification and validation against ANSYS Fluent / STAR-CCM+ and analytical benchmarks, including mesh-independence studies, to meet 5% acceptance limits.

10. Write unit and regression tests, and the theory and algorithm documentation required by DRDO DSSD standards: equations, discretisation, and variable-to-code mapping.

11. Work with the GUI (Qt/C++) team on solver APIs, and support NSTL technical reviews and training sessions.

Preferred candidate profile

Education: B. TECH/M.Tech / M.E. / PhD in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical or Applied Mechanics, with a specialisation in CFD, thermal sciences or computational mechanics.

Must have:

  • Strong modern C++ (C++14/17/20): OOP, templates, STL, memory management, performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience writing CFD solver code (not only using commercial tools): FVM discretisation, gradient and flux schemes, unstructured mesh data structures.
  • Sound knowledge of fluid mechanics and heat transfer: Navier-Stokes, energy equation, RANS turbulence modelling, conduction-convection-radiation.
  • Numerical methods: iterative linear solvers, preconditioners, convergence and stability, time integration.
  • Parallel programming with MPI and/or OpenMP.
  • Linux and Windows development with CMake, Git, debugging and profiling tools.
  • Working use of ANSYS Fluent, STAR-CCM+ or OpenFOAM for validation and comparison.

Preferred

  • Contributions to open-source CFD codes (SU2, OpenFOAM, Code_Saturne) or in-house solvers at DRDO, ISRO, HAL, NAL or IIT labs.
  • Conjugate heat transfer, combustion or exhaust plume modelling; radiation models (P1, DOM).
  • PETSc, hypre, Eigen, HDF5, CGNS.
  • Naval, aerospace or defence thermal applications; IR signature or ship-thermal work.

Experience with GoogleTest, CI pipelines and technical documentation for defence or regulated projects
