Chartering Manager
Chartering Manager
The Chartering Manager will own end-to-end freight procurement and execution for the company’s Asia-centric trade flows in steel, iron ore, coking coal, and ferrous/non-ferrous scrap — covering both dry bulk and containerized shipments. The role spans imports into Asia and exports out of Asia, and requires an established network of shipowners and operators across China, Korea, and the broader region to secure competitive, reliable tonnage across cycles.
· Source, negotiate, and fix dry bulk vessels(Handysize, Supramax/Ultramax, Panamax, Capesize as applicable) for iron ore, coking coal, and scrap cargoes on import and export legs into/out of Asia, with secondary exposure to Americas and European load/discharge ports.
· Manage container freight booking and contracting for steel products, scrap, and other containerized raw materials, working directly with liner operators, NVOCCs, and freight forwarders.
· Negotiate freight rates, charter party terms(e.g. NYPE, GENCON, BIMCO forms as relevant), laytime, and demurrage/despatch provisions; manage COAs where applicable.
· Build and actively maintain relationships with regional shipowners, operators, and brokers — particularly in China and Korea —to ensure preferential access to tonnage and competitive freight.
· Coordinate closely with trading, operations, and logistics teams on cargo nomination, laycan planning, vessel fixtures, and post-fixture follow-through.
· Track dry bulk and container freight market indicators (BDI, BCI, BPI, relevant container indices) and advise commercial teams on freight cost trends and optimal fixing windows.
· Manage demurrage/despatch claims and resolve disputes with owners, charterers, or carriers.
· Ensure vessel vetting, sanctions screening, P&I, and safety/quality compliance on all fixtures.
· Liaise with port agents, surveyors, and terminal operators across key Asian load/discharge ports.
· Support freight budgeting and cost optimization initiatives for the trading desk.
· Trade Coverage
· Steel and steel products, iron ore, coking/metallurgical coal, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap — imports into Asia and exports from Asia, across both bulk and container modes.
Requirements
· 5–7+ years of chartering/freight experience, with demonstrated exposure to **both** dry bulk and container shipments.
· Direct experience chartering for steel, iron ore, coal, and/or scrap trades strongly preferred.
· Established, active network of shipowners/operators in China and Korea, plus broader regional Asian contacts.
· Strong working knowledge of charter party terms, COA structures, laytime/demurrage calculations, and freight market mechanics.
· Bachelor’s degree in maritime studies, logistics, shipping, or a related commercial field; ICS or equivalent qualification a plus.
· Strong negotiation skills and commercial judgment, with the ability to manage counterparty relationships under pressure.
