Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer ("CFO") serves as a strategic leader and trusted advisor to the Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, and executive leadership team. The CFO provides enterprise-level leadership for the financial health, sustainability, stewardship, and long-term fiscal strategy of Jack & Jill Center.

The CFO is responsible for developing and executing financial strategies that support the organization's mission, strategic priorities, programs, and long-term sustainability. This position provides leadership across financial planning and analysis, budgeting, accounting and financial reporting, cash and investment management, internal controls, audit and compliance, grants and restricted funds, risk management, and financial systems.

The CFO leads the Finance function and is responsible for strengthening the team's capabilities, systems, processes, and accountability while ensuring accurate and effective execution of day-to-day financial operations.

Primary Position Responsibilities

As a member of executive leadership, the CFO translates complex financial information into actionable insights, strengthens organizational decision-making, and ensures financial resources are responsibly deployed to maximize mission impact. The CFO exercises financial oversight and decision-making authority within established organizational policies and CEO- and Board-approved authority structures and provides recommendations regarding matters requiring executive or Board approval.

Financial Strategy & Executive Leadership

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive financial strategy aligned with Jack & Jill Center's mission, strategic plan, and long-term organizational priorities.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO, Board, and executive leadership team regarding financial performance, organizational sustainability, growth opportunities, resource allocation, and financial risk.
  • Lead financial modeling, forecasting, scenario planning, and long-range financial planning to support organizational strategy and executive and Board decision-making.
  • Assess the financial implications of organizational strategies, programs, partnerships, capital investments, and other significant opportunities or commitments.
  • Translate complex financial information into clear, actionable recommendations for financial and non-financial leaders.
  • Participate actively in organizational strategic planning and executive leadership initiatives.
  • Exercise financial oversight and decision-making authority within established organizational policies and CEO- and Board-approved authority structures.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Performance

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with the CEO, executive leadership, and department leaders.
  • Develop forecasts and projections that anticipate changing organizational needs, funding conditions, and operating requirements.
  • Monitor financial performance against budget, forecast, and strategic objectives and proactively identify significant trends, risks, variances, and opportunities.
  • Develop and monitor key financial indicators and dashboards that provide leadership and the Board with meaningful visibility into organizational financial performance.
  • Partner with department leaders to strengthen budget ownership, financial understanding, and fiscal accountability.
  • Recommend corrective actions and resource-allocation strategies when financial performance varies from established plans.
  • Maintain appropriate cash-flow forecasting to support organizational liquidity and effective deployment of resources.

Accounting, Financial Reporting & Internal Controls

  • Ensure the accuracy, integrity, timeliness, and transparency of organizational financial records and reporting.
  • Oversee accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, revenue recognition, and financial close processes.
  • Ensure financial statements are prepared accurately and in accordance with applicable accounting standards and organizational requirements.
  • Establish, maintain, and continuously strengthen internal controls, financial policies, procedures, approval processes, and appropriate segregation of duties.
  • Ensure financial records and supporting documentation are appropriately maintained and readily available for organizational, audit, grant, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop scalable financial processes and controls appropriate to the organization's size, complexity, funding environment, and future direction.

Financial Systems, Automation & Process Improvement

  • Provide executive leadership for the optimization and automation of financial systems and workflows, including Blackbaud Financial Edge, to improve efficiency, accuracy, internal controls, reporting, and management visibility.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual processes, eliminate unnecessary duplication, standardize financial workflows, and improve the timely availability of financial information.
  • Oversee improvements to Financial Edge configuration, reporting, workflows, integrations, and related financial processes in partnership with staff, vendors, consultants, and other organizational stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Ensure financial-system automation and process improvements maintain appropriate controls, data integrity, security, accountability, and segregation of duties.
  • Evaluate financial technology, systems, and processes and recommend investments or improvements that strengthen organizational effectiveness and scalability.
  • Lead change management and staff adoption associated with significant financial-system and process improvements.

Audit, Compliance & Financial Governance

  • Lead the annual independent audit process and coordinate effectively with external auditors, organizational leadership, Finance staff, and the Board.
  • Oversee preparation of financial information required for the organization's Form 990 and other applicable regulatory filings.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit financial requirements, accounting standards, grant requirements, contractual obligations, and organizational financial policies.
  • Promptly address audit findings, internal-control recommendations, and identified financial or compliance concerns.
  • Partner with the CEO and appropriate Board committees to provide timely financial reporting, analysis, forecasts, and recommendations.
  • Present financial performance, significant risks, forecasts, and other material financial matters to the Board of Directors and/or Board committees as appropriate.
  • Maintain effective relationships with auditors, financial institutions, insurance providers, investment advisors, and other external financial partners.

Grants, Restricted Funds & Funding Compliance

  • Provide financial oversight for grants, restricted contributions, contracts, and other designated funding sources.
  • Partner with Advancement, Programs, and other departments to ensure accurate grant budgeting, expenditure tracking, financial reporting, and compliance.
  • Ensure restricted funds are appropriately recorded, monitored, reconciled, reported, and used in accordance with donor, grantor, contractual, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide financial analysis, budgets, projections, and supporting documentation for grant and funding proposals as appropriate.
  • Monitor funding trends, financial commitments, and grant requirements that may affect program sustainability or organizational capacity.
  • Strengthen cross-functional systems and processes for grant administration and financial accountability.

Cash, Banking, Investments & Asset Stewardship

  • Oversee organizational cash management, banking relationships, reserves, and investments in accordance with approved policies and established authority structures.
  • Monitor liquidity and working-capital requirements and maintain appropriate cash-flow projections.
  • Recommend strategies for the prudent management of organizational assets and financial reserves.
  • Ensure appropriate controls over cash, banking access, purchasing, disbursements, and financial authorizations.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations regarding significant capital expenditures and long-term financial commitments.

Risk Management & Organizational Sustainability

  • Identify, evaluate, and communicate significant financial and operational risks that may affect organizational sustainability.
  • Partner with executive leadership to develop strategies that mitigate financial exposure and strengthen organizational resilience.
  • Oversee financial components of organizational insurance and risk-management practices in coordination with appropriate internal and external partners.
  • Support contingency and scenario planning related to funding changes, economic conditions, program expansion, facilities, staffing, and other significant organizational decisions.
  • Periodically evaluate the Finance function's staffing, systems, controls, processes, and infrastructure to ensure they remain appropriate for organizational needs and future direction.

Finance Team & Cross-Functional Leadership

  • Lead, supervise, develop, and establish clear accountability for the Finance team
  • Establish clear roles, performance expectations, priorities, workflows, and standards for accurate and timely financial operations.
  • Coach and develop Finance staff while strengthening team capability, cross-training, continuity, and organizational knowledge.
  • Partner closely with the Director of People & Culture on workforce budgeting, compensation planning, benefits costs, payroll controls, organizational design, and workforce forecasting.
  • Collaborate with Advancement leadership regarding revenue projections, restricted funding, grants, donor reporting, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Partner with Program leadership to evaluate program costs, funding requirements, financial performance, and sustainability.
  • Equip department leaders with financial information, guidance, and tools necessary to make responsible business decisions.
  • Foster an organizational culture of financial accountability, transparency, collaboration, and responsible stewardship.

Revenue Analytics & Organizational Sustainability

  • Develop financial models evaluating enrollment, fundraising, grants, sponsorships, corporate partnerships, events, and fee-for-service revenue streams.
  • Analyze the financial performance and return on investment of fundraising campaigns, marketing initiatives, community events, enrollment efforts, and new program opportunities.
  • Monitor organizational revenue mix and recommend strategies that strengthen long-term sustainability through diversified revenue sources.
  • Partner with the executive leadership to develop long-range revenue diversification strategies and scenario planning models.
  • Conduct program profitability, cost recovery, and contribution margin analyses to evaluate the financial viability of programs and services.
  • Provide financial analysis supporting tuition and fee structures, financial assistance strategies, program expansion opportunities, and earned-income initiatives.
  • Develop organizational sustainability dashboards integrating revenue, expenses, enrollment trends, fundraising performance, operational indicators, and program outcomes.
  • Lead capital planning efforts and evaluate the financial feasibility of major organizational investments, facilities improvements, and growth initiatives.
  • Identify emerging financial risks and opportunities and provide recommendations that support organizational sustainability and long-term growth.

The Chief Financial Officer possesses the following minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required; Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline preferred.
  • CPA or other relevant professional financial certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 8–10 years of progressively responsible finance and accounting experience, including significant senior financial leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with nonprofit accounting, restricted funds, grant accounting, financial reporting, audit requirements, and applicable nonprofit financial and regulatory requirements required.
  • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, financial reporting, internal controls, audit management, and cash-flow management.
  • Demonstrated experience advising executive leadership and presenting financial information, analysis, and recommendations to a Board of Directors or Board committee.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing Finance or Accounting personnel.
  • Experience leading financial-system implementation, optimization, automation, or significant financial process improvement required.
  • Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge or comparable nonprofit financial systems preferred.
  • Experience within an education, human services, early childhood, or similarly complex mission-driven organization preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate financial data and complex financial matters into actionable recommendations for non-financial leaders.
  • Experience strengthening financial systems, controls, policies, and processes in a growing or evolving organization preferred.
  • Strong strategic, analytical, leadership, communication, judgment, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • High degree of integrity and demonstrated ability to manage confidential and sensitive financial and organizational information.
  • A valid driver’s license and proper documentation to work in the United States.
