Chief Operating Officer
About the Role
Ama Zuma Group is seeking a Chief Operating Officer to oversee the day-to-day operations of its downstream oil & gas business — spanning product procurement/trading, logistics/transport, and retail/petrol station operations — ensuring safe, efficient, profitable, and compliant operations while scaling the business across retail, haulage, and trading.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee downstream operations (retail stations, product haulage, petroleum trading)
- Develop and execute operational strategy to meet revenue, volume, and margin targets
- Monitor KPIs: throughput, stock losses, station profitability, fleet utilization, OPEX
- Manage retail/petrol station network, HSE standards, and site profitability
- Drive retail expansion, site acquisition, and franchise/dealer management
- Oversee product transportation, route planning, and haulage compliance
- Manage loading at depots, trucking contracts, and driver welfare
- Work with Commercial/Trading on product sourcing, importation, and wholesale trading
- Monitor market pricing, margins, and competitor activity
- Manage relationships with NNPC, major marketers, depot owners, and suppliers
- Enforce HSE standards and ensure regulatory compliance (NMDPRA, NESREA, PPPRA)
- Manage operational risk (theft, adulteration, fire, insurance, audit controls)
- Lead and develop Heads of Retail, Logistics, Trading, HSE, and Operations
- Own the annual operating budget and drive cost optimization
- Report to CEO/Board on operational performance and growth opportunities
- Drive digitalization initiatives (POS, ERP, fleet tracking, telemetry)
Requirements
- BSc in Engineering, Business, or related field (MBA/MSc an advantage)
- 12+ years' experience in downstream oil & gas, with 5+ years in senior leadership
- Hands-on experience in at least 2 of: retail, transport, trading
- Deep understanding of NMDPRA regulations, product supply chain, retail P&L, and haulage operations in Nigeria
- Strategic thinking, P&L ownership, and crisis management skills
- Strong stakeholder management and commercial acumen
- HSE, PMP, or Oil & Gas operations certifications are a plus
