Location & Schedule

This position is based at the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building, located at 201 W. Colfax Ave., Denver, CO 80202. This position is not eligible for a hybrid work schedule. Employees are expected to work on-site five (5) days per week. Work is performed at the Webb Municipal Building and at construction sites throughout the City and County of Denver as business needs require. The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., although occasional alternative hours may be required.

The selected candidate must provide their own vehicle to perform field inspections. Mileage is paid in accordance with the standard IRS rate.

The City and County of Denver's Community Planning and Development Department (CPD) is seeking an experienced and collaborative Chief Trades Supervisor to lead Construction Trades Inspectors responsible for enforcing the Denver Building Code and applicable International Codes. This position provides technical leadership, employee development, operational oversight, and official code interpretation while supporting safe construction and exceptional customer service throughout Denver.

Key Responsibilities:

• Consults with architects, engineers, contractors, departmental supervisors, and others to provide official building code interpretation and coordinates inspections and projects with other city agencies and/or state and federal agencies

• Serves on code committees and panels, originates amendments to code, and recommends adoption of standards

• Supervises the training of inspection personnel in technical inspection procedures and advises and assists subordinates with difficult technical inspections. Keeps informed of new technical developments and trade practices and recommends improved inspection methods and amendments to existing code regulations

• Implements safety standards and develops procedures to ensure compliance

• Develops or modifies work plans, methods, and procedures, determines work priorities, and develops work schedules to provide adequate staff coverage

• Assigns and distributes work, reviews work for accuracy and completeness, and returns assignments with recommendations for proper completion

• Resolves problems encountered during daily operations and determines standards for problem resolution

• Develops the performance enhancement plan, documents performance, provides performance feedback, and formally evaluates the work of employees

• Responds to formal and informal employee grievances and prepares a written response.

• Documents cause for disciplinary action and initiates letters of reprimand and formal recommendations for disciplinary action.

• Comply with standard safety rules and procedures common to the trade.

• Proven ability to manage competing priorities, make sound decisions under pressure, and develop practical solutions to complex problems.

• Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to accountability and continuous improvement.

• Proficiency with standard business software and the ability to quickly learn department-specific systems, including permit tracking and document management applications.

• Ability to read, interpret, and navigate construction plans, specifications, blueprints, and other technical documents.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Education: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

• Experience: Three (3) years of experience working as an inspector in the specific trade area.

• Education/Experience Equivalency: A combination of appropriate education and experience may be substituted for the minimum education and experience requirements

• This job requires driving. Requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application

• Possession of specific trades licenses and/or certifications listed below at the time of application depending on the opening

• Construction: (Must possess at least two of the listed certifications.)

  • International Code Council Certification as a Building Inspector

  • International Code Council Certification as a Residential Combination Inspector

  • International Code Council Certification as a Commercial Inspector

  • International Code Council Certification as a General Contractor

  • Supervisor Certificate – Construction A issued by the City and County of Denver

• Additional licenses or certifications that are legally required to perform a specific position's duties and responsibilities may be required at the time of application or by the end of probation (or within 6 months of hire) depending on the staffing needs of the hiring department or agency

• Licensure in another state with reciprocity may be accepted in lieu of this requirement, provided that the applicant has Colorado licensure at completion of probation
