Civil Design Technician

The Civil Design Technician is responsible for managing and implementing all aspects of computer-aided design (CAD) technology within the company. This role includes enforcing CAD standards, providing technical expertise, training on CAD advancements, maintaining organized CAD files, assisting engineers and project managers with detailed drawings, and ensuring compliance with project goals and regulations. The CAD Technician will create 2D and 3D models, perform earthwork calculations, prepare as-built drawings, conduct quality checks, and coordinate with field teams to ensure design feasibility.

Responsibilities/Duties:

• Stay updated on CAD advancements and integrate new technologies as appropriate.
• Ensure all users are proficient in the use of CAD tools and applications.
• Ensure proper version control and accessibility of CAD files.
• Maintain an organized filing system for easy retrieval and reference.
• Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and surveyors to interpret project requirements.
• Develop detailed drawings on time and within budget.
• Ensure that all plans and drawings comply with project goals, local regulations, and company standards.
• Review and verify design specifications.
• Develop 2D and 3D models of infrastructure and industrial projects.
• Ensure models are accurate and detailed.
• Calculate earthwork volumes and create utility layouts.
• Develop grading plans and construction detailing.
• Revise designs to reflect field modifications or changes in project scope.
• Ensure as-built drawings are accurate and up-to-date.
• Perform quality checks on CAD outputs to ensure accuracy and clarity.
• Ensure all designs comply with engineering specifications.
• Validate design feasibility and address constructability issues with field teams.
• Ensure designs are practical and executable.
• Integrate CAD designs with BIM platforms.
• Create machine files and incorporate GIS data if applicable.
• Provide CAD support for cost analysis and material planning.

Skills/Abilities:

• Strong AutoCAD skills.
• Civil 3D experience should be preferred and I'd probably make it required for the higher-level Civil Designer title.
• Ability to prepare and revise:
  • Plan and profile drawings
  • Utility layouts
  • Grading/site plans
  • Piping layouts
  • Details and sections
  • As-built/record drawings
• Able to work from survey data, engineer markups, field measurements and construction plans.
• Understanding of basic civil construction means and methods.
• Ability to calculate quantities and assist with takeoffs.
• Familiarity with Bluebeam and Microsoft 365.
• Procore experience would be a plus

Qualifications:

• Proven experience as a CAD Technician or similar role.
• Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Autodesk Construction Cloud, etc.).
• Strong understanding of CAD standards and best practices.
• Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, CAD/Drafting, Construction Technology, or related field preferred.
