Description

Civil Design Engineer - Residential Development
Location: Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire
Salary: £40,000 - £55,000 (dependent on experience)
Benefits: Company Car + Fully Funded Fuel (Business & Personal) + Hybrid Working + Additional Benefits

Are you a Civil Design Engineer looking for an opportunity to develop your career within residential construction? Perhaps you're currently working within a civil engineering consultancy and would like to see your designs come to life, or you're already working within housebuilding and looking for greater responsibility and progression?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly stable business with an excellent reputation for employee retention, offering genuine long-term career prospects, a supportive engineering team and the opportunity to gain exposure to the full lifecycle of residential developments. Importantly, you don't need to have done everything before! The hiring manager is open to considering candidates at different stages of their careers, whether you're an experienced Engineer, an Assistant Engineer ready to progress, or someone with relevant civil engineering design experience looking to move into the housebuilding sector.

The Opportunity
Working closely with the Engineering Manager and an established technical team, you'll play an important role in delivering the civil engineering requirements for residential developments. Unlike positions where design work is predominantly outsourced, this opportunity offers genuine hands-on engineering design responsibilities alongside the coordination, problem-solving and practical involvement needed to take developments from initial design through to construction. You'll have the opportunity to develop your technical expertise, work collaboratively with construction teams and see the direct impact of your work on live developments.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Producing and coordinating civil engineering designs using AutoCAD, including roads, drainage and sewer infrastructure.
  • Supporting Section 38 and Section 104 designs, technical submissions and approvals.
  • Preparing external levels, private drainage and associated engineering drawings.
  • Coordinating utility designs, diversions and infrastructure requirements.
  • Working closely with internal construction, commercial and technical teams to resolve engineering queries.
  • Visiting development sites to assess engineering challenges, review work against drawings and identify practical solutions.
  • Liaising with local authorities, approving bodies and external consultants where required.
  • Supporting foundation design coordination, engineering approvals and the discharge of relevant planning conditions.
  • Contributing to the successful delivery of engineering packages across multiple residential developments.

What Are We Looking For?
We're keen to speak with individuals who have a background in civil engineering design, residential development or a related construction environment. The key requirement is practical engineering experience, a working knowledge of AutoCAD and the enthusiasm to learn and develop.

Ideally, you'll bring:

  • Experience within civil engineering design, whether gained with a housebuilder, engineering consultancy, local authority or similar environment.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD - this is essential.
  • An understanding of engineering drawings and the ability to interpret designs and identify practical solutions.
  • Some exposure to roads, drainage, infrastructure or residential development projects.
  • Good communication skills and the confidence to work with both office-based colleagues and site teams.
  • A proactive, organised approach and a genuine interest in developing your engineering career.
  • Experience with Section 38/104 agreements, highway design, drainage software or residential infrastructure would certainly be advantageous, but isn't essential if you have a relevant engineering background and the willingness to learn.

Formal qualifications are not a deciding factor. Relevant hands-on experience and the right attitude are equally important.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

There are some excellent reasons to consider joining this business:

  • £40,000 - £55,000 salary, depending on your experience.
  • Company car with business and personal fuel fully funded.
  • Hybrid working, with one day per week working from home.
  • Genuine career progression, with opportunities to develop into more senior engineering positions.
  • Long-term stability, joining an established, privately owned business with a strong track record of employee retention.

This opportunity would particularly suit someone who enjoys the technical side of engineering but also wants to be involved in the wider development process, rather than spending every day solely producing drawings.
