The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Civil Engineering Technician serves in a lead technical role supporting the development of high-quality civil engineering deliverables for complex infrastructure projects. This position applies advanced civil engineering knowledge to the creation and modification of site development plans, grading designs, and utility layouts using industry-standard tools such as Autodesk Civil 3D. The Senior Technician provides technical guidance, consultation, and training to technicians and engineering staff, ensuring consistency, quality, and adherence to design standards. This role may coordinate and oversee assigned technicians, supporting both conceptual and detailed design activities to deliver efficient, accurate, and mission-aligned civil solutions.

Job Summary
  • Functions as a senior engineering technician, technical design specialist, and/or supervisor.
  • Applies advanced technical expertise to solve complex design challenges within a specific engineering discipline.
  • Contributes to the development of innovative engineering solutions.
  • Uses digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) with standardized procedures to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables.
  • Provides consultation, training, and oversight to other engineering technicians to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance with project standards.
Key Responsibilities
  • Establishes and communicates appropriate design and graphic standards.
  • Reviews project requirements to determine correct formats and deliverable content.
  • Promotes quality and consistency across projects, groups, and sections.
  • Reviews design inputs to ensure alignment and consistency.
  • Ensures deliverables comply with applicable codes and standards.
  • May contribute to the continuous improvement of design guides, standards, and processes.
  • May participate in and lead process improvement and change management activities.
  • Manages drawing control and maintains historical project records.
  • Applies engineering principles and established design practices to complex designs.
  • Exercises sound judgment in interpreting inputs and making deliverable-related decisions.
  • Handles complex technical assignments and provides guidance to other professionals.
  • Performs design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and documentation.
  • May review deliverables produced by others for quality and accuracy.
  • May coordinate presentations, production design, and use of electronic design tools.
  • May monitor production to ensure consistency, budget, and schedule.
  • May program control systems or support plant start-up activities within area of expertise.
  • Coordinates with other design groups to exchange information for design development.
  • May support field activities as required.
  • Communicates project design requirements, progress, and schedules.
  • Assists with identifying key client interests and project drivers, communicates those needs to the project team, and helps develop solutions to address client objectives.
  • Assists discipline or department leadership in developing and communicating design standards and process improvement initiatives.
  • Identifies and supports training and development needs for supervised personnel.
  • Serves as a recognized technical expert in one or more specialty areas and may be assigned to resolve complex design challenges or support specialized project teams.
  • Delivers presentations and conducts training sessions within areas of technical expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Design Technology, or a related field required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Design Technology or a related discipline preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Typically requires a minimum of 11 years of related experience.
