Description

Grade 1 Class Teacher – Internal Posting
Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School · Full-time, salaried · Start date: August, 2027

Salary Range: Minimum $53,000 base salary, based on experience. Base salary increase for 2027-28 still TBD.

Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School is seeking a class teacher for our rising first-grade class. This posting is open to current Hawthorne Valley Association employees only.

About the position
The class teacher holds primary responsibility for the well-being of the students in the class and for planning daily lessons that engage head, heart and hands, meet the developmental needs of each grade, and embody the foundational goals of Waldorf education. The class teacher also keeps clear, warm communication with parents, contributes to a healthy Lower School culture, and builds collegial relationships across the school.

Class teachers are expected to guide their students on their journey through the grades. Lower School teachers in good standing may join the Middle School team when their class enters Grade 6, or loop back to Grade 1 after Grade 5. We hope applicants are open to at least a five-year commitment.

Key responsibilities

  • Teach main lesson and skills each morning, plus 5–8 extra main lessons a week, for about 30 hours of time with students each week
  • Plan block rotations and lessons each summer that reflect the HVS scope and sequence, our All School Learning Goals, and the 8 Principles of Waldorf Education
  • Teach the full Waldorf curriculum including form drawing, music, painting, drawing, modeling, math and language arts
  • Hold two parent-teacher conferences and at least three parent evenings each year
  • Attend weekly faculty and level meetings, in-service days, festivals and open houses, and serve on a school committee

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Completion of a recognized Waldorf teacher training program, or a plan in place to complete one
  • Teaching experience, ideally in a Waldorf school
  • Strong knowledge of the Waldorf curriculum in Grades 1–5
  • Excellent written and oral communication, and a warm, professional approach with parents
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, collaboration with colleagues, and the diversity, equity and inclusion work so necessary in our time
  • Interest in bringing the resources of HVA and our local area into the class’s learning

Schedule and benefits
Monday–Friday, 7:45 am–3:15 pm, with additional time for meetings. Faculty meetings begin the last week of August. The position reports to the Lower School Chair and the School Director. Benefits include health and dental insurance, 90% tuition remission, a pension and paid time off.

How to apply
Please email a letter of intent and a resume to Karin Almquist, School Director, at kalmquist@hawthornevalley.org by November 15. Applicants will be invited to practice-teach in the first grade on two consecutive days. On the first day, you’ll observe the class and tell a story at the end. On the second, you’ll lead circle and book work. An interview with the hiring commitee will follow. This process is subject to change and will be confirmed prior to an interview.
