About the Role:

The Clinical Application Analyst 3 – Research is an integral part of the Research Technology team within Technology and Digital Solutions (TDS). This vibrant and innovative team provides cutting-edge research technology solutions and services across all of Stanford Medicine (Stanford School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford Children’s Health).
In this senior individual contributor role, you will implement, administer, optimize, and support the Epic Research module and our Clinical Trial Management System (CTMS) under minimal to no supervision. You will apply deep technical and workflow expertise to bridge clinical research workflows with enterprise healthcare operations, working closely with researchers, study teams, clinical operations, and IT partners.
Key Responsibilities & Focus:
• System Implementation & Support: Serve as a subject matter expert for Epic Research and the CTMS. Perform a lead role in software upgrades, enhancement requests, complex configuration, and tier-2/3 operational support.
• Complex Problem-Solving & Analysis: Independently evaluate complex workflow and integration challenges across applications, interfaces, data structures, and ancillary systems. Deliver robust, innovative solutions and clear technical documentation.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with research stakeholders, clinical teams, and TDS technical groups (Integration, Infrastructure, Enterprise Analytics) to design workflows that support groundbreaking clinical research while maintaining system stability and compliance.
• Mentorship & Informal Leadership: Act as a technical mentor and informal leader within the team—guiding Application Analyst I & II colleagues, sharing best practices, and fostering continuous learning and adoption of modern tools (including AI-enabled workflows).
Qualifications & Ideal Candidate Profile:
• Experience: 7+ years of application analyst experience in healthcare IT, with a proven track record of supporting complex clinical or research applications and major system implementations/upgrades.
• Epic Certifications: Current Epic certification in Research (Clinical Research / Research Billing) or related clinical/ancillary modules (e.g., Willow, Beacon, Orders, Ambulatory) required, or ability to obtain within 4 months. Experience with CTMS workflows/integrations is highly preferred.
• Skills & Attributes: Highly self-directed and detail-oriented with exceptional analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills. Comfortable navigating complex organizational discussions, translating business needs into technical solutions, and championing innovative approaches.

A Brief Overview
The Application Analyst III is a senior-level role for experienced analysts who have demonstrated sustained, high-quality performance and technical depth across multiple application areas. This position implements, administers, and supports assigned systems under minimal to no supervision, and has a thorough understanding of Epic modules or clinical applications, ancillary systems, and health system operations. The Analyst III independently addresses issues and design decisions of moderate to high complexity, delivers clear communication and documentation of complex concepts across the organization, and serves as an informal leader within the team — mentoring Application Analyst I and II staff, modeling self-direction and continuous growth, and helping the team develop and improve rather than defaulting to the status quo.

What you will do

  • Application Support & Incident Resolution
  • Provide tier-2 support of application incidents reported through the help desk, including 24/7 on-call coverage as required
  • Implementation, Upgrades & Enhancements
  • Perform a major role in complex software upgrade initiatives
  • Lead small- to medium-complexity new software installations and enhancement requests
  • Implement changes using documented procedures that are compliant with department policies and procedures
  • Analysis, Design & Problem Solving
  • Act as a technology subject matter expert and clearly communicate technical concepts in business terms between and across different groups while influencing outcomes
  • Continually identify opportunities for functional and stability improvement in applications, and constructively challenge existing approaches when a better solution exists
  • Identify system optimization and enhancement opportunities and collaborate with vendors and other IT analysts to design and implement effective solutions
  • Anticipate and resolve system problems; proactively identify and resolve technical debt
  • Research issues and use independent analysis and judgment to produce solution options — including alternative solutions when necessary to address system limitations — for complex and/or controversial matters, including pros, cons, risks, benefits, costs, and unintended consequences. Collaboratively consult with Platform Experts on identifying best way to solve complex novel problems
  • Documentation
  • Maintain up-to-date project documents for all initiatives, including technical details, user expectations, project goals, work effort, accountability, and deliverables
  • Document routine and complex workflows and support activities using established templates and standards
  • Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Mentor Application Analyst I and II team members, providing hands-on guidance on technical tasks, Epic or clinical application build practices, workflow analysis, and professional growth to support their progression toward Analyst II or III
  • Provide analytical assistance to junior team members to resolve application incidents, maintenance items, and enhancement requests
  • Serve as an informal leader within the team — modeling self-direction, curiosity, initiative, and a focus on continuous growth and development for self and others
  • Coordinate application support with other information technology teams, including Infrastructure, Integration, Enterprise Analytics, and the help desk
  • Work with and mentor junior staff members to document workflows
  • Meetings & Governance
  • Participate in and frequently facilitate/organize team and cross-team meetings, and maintain appropriate meeting records. Communicate relevant updates to team members and stakeholders and bring back feedback to forums.

  • Model and champion the effective, appropriate use of AI-enabled tools within the team's build, support, and analysis workflows, helping less experienced analysts apply them soundly
  • Maintain a strong self-directed learning practice, pursuing training and certification in new areas to broaden and deepen technical expertise


Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business or Health Administration, Management Systems, Technology, Health Information Management, or a directly related field from an accredited college or university
  • Candidates with five (5) years of work experience in a healthcare or general office setting in addition to 7 years of analyst experience may substitute for the degree requirement


Experience Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of Application Analyst experience, with a demonstrated track record of progressively responsible, directly related work. Experience with 2 major application platform upgrades or implementations preferred

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $64.63 - $85.65 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
