Clinical Laboratory Scientist

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

The incumbent serves as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Microbiology Section of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Scientist is proficient in performing both routine and specialized work in Bacteriology, Mycology and Molecular Microbiology with full technical competence and independence. The incumbent will rotate weekends and holidays. The duties and responsibilities of the Microbiology Clinical Laboratory Scientist include but are not limited to the following: The Advanced CLS Micro is proficient in performing both routine and specialized work in Bacteriology, Mycology and PCR technology at the Microbiology laboratory with full technical competence and independence. Functions as primary operator for analytical instruments including preventative maintenance and quality control. Complete employee competency records, supply functions, quality control review, new method development, or employee or student training; or provide professional and technical advice to other less experienced technicians and technologists Modifies or adapts new methods or techniques to improve or expand services. Develops protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results. Performs validation/method verification studies for new systems. Consults with healthcare providers on logical protocol to follow in attempting to confirm the diagnosis or risk assessment of a patient. Responsible for assisting in writing and updating procedure manuals and other documents for a specific laboratory function as directed by the supervisor. Uses advanced computer skills in several computer applications to generate work-related information to supervisor and performs other duties as assigned Ensures that laboratory tests and procedures are consistent with accrediting agencies standards and requirements. Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures included within the Clinical Laboratory Scientist occupation. Organizes work and sets priorities to meet deadlines. Evaluates and solves problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis, considering physiologic processes and requirements. Knowledge of unique handling requirements of specimens including urine, sputum, wound swabs, stools and understanding of the procedures for performing all of the tests offered by the Microbiology laboratory. Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs and performs preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. Diagnosis deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction. Performs and documents quality control and assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement. Responsible for entering and verifying laboratory results in the computer system. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors, including test results. Interprets results and suggests follow-up test selection or procedures. Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction and training of new employees and students and in the laboratory in service/continuing education program. Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member. Provides excellent service as defined by the customer (healthcare providers, patients, and others). Gives direction and guidance using underlying principles of laboratory testing. Ensures compliance with rules and regulations agencies such as CAP and JHACO. Participate in training of new personnel and continuing education activities. Is responsible for the oversight of Microbiology department in the absence of the Lead Tech and Supervisor. Performs other duties as assigned.
