Cloud DevOps Engineer

Salary: $185,000 + superannuation

Most Cloud and DevOps Engineers join environments where the foundations have already been built.

The landing zones, pipelines and engineering standards are established. Your job is largely to operate and improve what someone else designed.

Here, you'll join much earlier.

Our client is an established organisation undertaking a significant technology transformation. As part of that investment, they're establishing a modern Azure platform to support the next generation of enterprise services.

This is a hands-on role for someone who already knows what good Azure and DevOps engineering looks like and is ready to bring that experience into a broader environment.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to a senior technology leader, you'll help build, automate and operate that Azure platform.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Building Azure infrastructure as code, with Bicep as the preferred approach
  • Engineering Azure compute, networking, storage, App Services and supporting platform services
  • Building CI/CD pipelines across build, testing, approvals, release and rollback
  • Establishing consistent non-production and production environments
  • Implementing identity, access, secrets management and network security controls across Azure
  • Building monitoring, logging and alerting using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and Application Insights
  • Establishing backup, high availability and disaster recovery capability
  • Applying Azure governance, policy, tagging and cost-management practices
  • Automating operational and platform activities
  • Producing technical documentation and supporting operational handover
  • Working with architects and delivery partners to turn technical designs into production outcomes

You'll also gain exposure to a broader modern Microsoft ecosystem as the environment develops.

What makes this opportunity different?

In larger organisations, Cloud Engineers can become highly specialised.

Networking belongs to one team. Security sits somewhere else. Architecture makes the design decisions and DevOps standards may have been established years before you arrive.

Here, you'll work across those boundaries.

You'll remain hands-on while working closely with architecture as the environment develops. Rather than simply implementing finished designs, you'll be expected to bring your own experience, form a technical view and contribute to how the platform is engineered.

External partners will remain important, but the organisation is building greater internal cloud capability. It wants someone who understands the Azure environment, can deliver directly and has the technical credibility to challenge partners when required.

What you'll bring

We're interested in speaking with experienced Cloud, DevOps or Platform Engineers with strong recent Microsoft Azure experience.

You'll ideally bring:

  • 5+ years' experience across cloud, DevOps or platform engineering
  • Strong hands-on Azure engineering capability
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience using Bicep, ARM or Terraform
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines through Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions
  • Practical knowledge across Azure networking, identity, security and monitoring
  • Scripting and automation capability using PowerShell, Bash, Python or similar
  • Strong technical judgement and the confidence to work effectively with architects and external partners

Bicep experience is preferred, but strong infrastructure-as-code fundamentals are more important.

Experience across broader Microsoft technologies, SRE practices or regulated enterprise environments will be well regarded but isn't essential.

Next steps

This opportunity offers $185,000 + superannuation on an initial 12-month maximum-term engagement, with a genuine 50/50 hybrid working model from the Sydney CBD.

While there may be scope beyond the initial term as the transformation progresses, any continuation would remain subject to future approval.
