The Cloud Engineer is responsible for the design, security, reliability and optimisation of yourtown's Azure and hybrid infrastructure. The role ensures the effective delivery of cloud services, drives automation and DevOps practices, and provides technical leadership to support the ongoing modernisation of yourtown's technology environment.

responsibilities

May include, but are not limited to:

· Cloud architecture and engineering

o Collaborate with the Architecture Review Group and relevant stakeholders to have design input to help evolve Azure and hybrid infrastructure solutions aligned with approved architecture principles, Microsoft guidance and organisational requirements.

o Provision, configure, manage and support Azure and hybrid infrastructure services as a senior technical resource, providing technical guidance and mentoring to administrators and other team members without direct people-management responsibility.

· Automation, DevOps and Continuous Improvement

o Advance DevOps and Infrastructure as Code practices across the organisation. Develop and maintain reusable Terraform and Bicep configurations, deployment scripts and automation using tools such as Terraform, Azure CLI and Azure PowerShell. Support automated provisioning and configuration through Azure DevOps Pipelines, with JIRA and Confluence used for work management and documentation.

o Support automated provisioning and configuration through Azure DevOps Pipelines and contribute to the evolution of the organisation's DevOps operating model.

· Infrastructure, operations and service reliability

o Maintain and improve monitoring and alerting capabilities to proactively identify and resolve issues. Analyse and troubleshoot incidents across Azure and on-premises infrastructure, contribute to problem management and participate in the rostered on-call incident response team.

o Support the secure and compliant operation of cloud and hybrid platforms by maintaining and developing security controls, identity governance and operational practices aligned with organisational policies, industry standards and regulatory requirements.

o Optimise Azure resources, including virtual machines, databases, networking and storage, to improve performance, resilience, utilisation and cost effectiveness. Monitor service metrics, tune configurations and identify opportunities to reduce unnecessary consumption.

· Stakeholder engagement and technical leadership

o Collaborate with cross-functional technology and business teams to gather requirements, provide senior technical advice and resolve complex issues. Create and maintain architecture, design, configuration and operational documentation for Azure and hybrid services.

o Provide technical leadership through sound judgement, knowledge sharing, peer review and mentoring. Help build capability across the team, support consistent engineering practices and contribute to the organisation's technology roadmap and DevOps operating model.

• Demonstrate an understanding of and meet the requirements of the position and all performance expectations including:

o Maintaining currency of knowledge with regards to relevant legislation, professional practice and emerging trends to ensure advice is current and effective.

o Participating in other duties and cross-functional teams as may be required, in order to achieve efficient and effective yourtown services.

o Participating in and meeting the expectations as agreed pursuant to the Organisational Performance System processes.

o From time to time assist in other locations and travel intrastate, or interstate, as required.

selection criteria

Essential knowledge, skills, abilities:

· Strong experience designing, implementing, operating and supporting Azure-based and hybrid infrastructure solutions.

· At least five years' experience in Azure cloud engineering, infrastructure build and operational support roles.

· In-depth knowledge of Azure services, including virtual machines, storage, networking, security, monitoring and governance.

· Demonstrated experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, including the development, maintenance and controlled deployment of reusable configurations.

· Proficiency in automation and scripting using Azure CLI and/or Azure PowerShell, together with experience using CI/CD and deployment automation tools such as Azure DevOps Pipelines and Azure Repos Git.

· Strong experience managing hybrid identity environments incorporating on-premises Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, including directory synchronisation, authentication, identity and access management, and privileged access controls.

· Sound understanding of cloud security, compliance, governance, resilience and cost-management principles, supported by strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across Azure and hybrid environments.

Desirable knowledge, skills, abilities:

· Experience providing technical leadership, mentoring team members, reviewing technical work and improving engineering and operational practices.

· Understanding of Azure data services, including Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure Data Factory, and data migration strategies.

· Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104), with interest in or progress towards Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) or a relevant Terraform certification.
