CNC Programmer
Summary
A CNC Programmer bridges detailing and manufacturing in an exhibit production shop: writing and optimizing 2D/3D and multi-axis (4-axis) programs in Mastercam, reading shop drawings and GD&T, selecting tooling for wood, acrylic, and metals, simulating and testing programs, and troubleshooting G-code on the shop floor.
- Programming & Software Utilization: Write, test, edit, and optimize 2D, 3D, and multi-axis CNC programs, including 4-axis toolpaths, using CAM software such as Mastercam.
- Blueprint Analysis: Read and interpret complex exhibit shop drawings, technical drawings, 3D models, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to establish accurate cutting and boring profiles.
- Material & Tool Selection: Select the appropriate cutting tools, router bits, diamond tooling, speeds, and feeds based on the properties of hardwood, plywood, MDF, acrylic, aluminum, steel, and other sheet goods.
- Simulation & Testing: Run computer simulations and trial test runs before production to identify programming errors, potential collisions, and risks of tool or machine damage.
- Machine Setup & Troubleshooting: Perform initial setups and dry runs on the machine controller; diagnose and correct program errors on the Shop floor; edit G-code as needed; and improve cycle times and production efficiency.
- Quality Assurance: Conduct regular dimensional checks using calipers, tape measures, and micrometers to ensure completed pieces match exact design tolerances.
- Experience: 3 to 5+ years of hands-on CNC machining or programming experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably involving wood, cabinetry, or exhibit fabrication; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Technical Software: Strong proficiency with CAD/CAM software, including Mastercam X9 or newer, as well as working knowledge of Autodesk AutoCAD and Inventor.
- Machining Knowledge: Strong knowledge of multi-axis CNC routers, including 3-, 4-, or 5-axis systems, and flat-table nesting equipment.
- G-Code Fluency: The ability to write, read, and edit G-code formulas on the fly.
- Attention to Detail: Demonstrated precision when reading measurements and verifying components with tape measures and calipers to ensure work meets design tolerances.
