Discussion

Description

AFP/Schivo in Berlin CT is seeking to hire an experienced, highly motivated, and self-sufficient CNC Setup Machinist / Operator to join our second-shift manufacturing team.

The ideal candidate must be capable of independently setting up, operating, adjusting, and troubleshooting CNC machining equipment while maintaining high standards of precision, quality, and productivity.

This is not an entry-level machine operator position. We are looking for a hands-on machinist who understands machining processes, can interpret technical drawings, modify CNC G-code when necessary, and resolve production issues without requiring continuous supervision.

The successful candidate will take ownership of machine performance, part quality, and production efficiency throughout their shift.

*****work shift-4pm to 12 midnight ability to do overtime*****

CNC Setup & Operator-Key Responsibilities

  • Independently set up and operate CNC machining centers.
  • Perform machine changeovers, including tooling, fixtures, work offsets, and program selection.
  • Establish and verify tool offsets, work coordinates, cutting parameters, and setup conditions.
  • Conduct first-piece inspections and make necessary adjustments before production.
  • Maintain consistent production output while meeting quality and dimensional requirements.

CNC Programming & Troubleshooting

  • Read, understand, and make necessary modifications to CNC G-code and M-code programs.
  • Adjust feeds, speeds, tool paths, offsets, and machining parameters to optimize performance.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems, dimensional inconsistencies, tool wear, and machine alarms.
  • Identify root causes of machining issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Recognize when a problem requires maintenance or engineering support and communicate it effectively.

Quality & Precision Manufacturing

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and GD&T requirements.
  • Perform dimensional inspections using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Verify parts meet specifications throughout the production process.
  • Identify and correct quality issues before they result in scrap or production delays.
  • Maintain accurate production and inspection records.

Independent Second-Shift Responsibilities

  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Prioritize assigned production jobs and manage machine utilization.
  • Make sound technical decisions to maintain production efficiency.
  • Communicate production status, machine issues, and completed work to the next shift.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment.
  • Follow established manufacturing procedures and safety requirements.

CNC Set up Operator Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 3–5 years of hands-on CNC machining experience, preferably including independent setup responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to independently set up and operate CNC milling equipment.
  • Working knowledge of CNC G-code and M-code, including the ability to make program edits.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and dimensional tolerances.
  • Experience selecting and changing cutting tools, adjusting offsets, and optimizing machining parameters.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions without constant supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, reliability, and commitment to producing quality parts.
  • Willingness and ability to work second shift.

  • CNC Set up Operator Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with 3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis CNC machining centers.
  • Familiarity with Fanuc, Haas, or similar CNC controls.
  • Experience machining engineering polymers such as PEEK, ULTEM, acetal, or other precision materials.
  • Experience manufacturing close-tolerance components for medical devices, life-science instrumentation, or industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software.
  • Experience improving machining processes, reducing cycle times, and minimizing scrap.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are specifically looking for someone who:

  • Is self-sufficient: Can manage setups, machine operation, and troubleshooting independently.
  • Is technically capable: Understands CNC machining beyond loading and unloading parts.
  • Is resourceful: Can identify problems, determine solutions, and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Takes ownership: Accepts responsibility for machine performance, quality, and production output.
  • Is dependable: Can be trusted to operate effectively on second shift with limited supervision.
  • Is quality-focused: Understands the importance of precision, consistency, and manufacturing standards.

What We Offer

  • Full-time employment with a growing precision manufacturing organization.
  • Opportunity to work on technically challenging, high-precision components.
  • Exposure to advanced manufacturing applications in life sciences, diagnostics, and industrial markets.
  • Competitive compensation based on experience and technical capabilities.
  • Opportunity for professional development and increased responsibility.

Position Expectations

The successful candidate must be capable of receiving a production assignment, independently setting up the CNC equipment, verifying the machining process, producing conforming components, and resolving routine machining problems without requiring direct oversight.

We are seeking a true setup machinist and problem-solver, not someone who only operates an already configured machine.
