Small Business Unit – Commercial Lines Insurance

Position: Commercial Lines Small Business Underwriter / Account Manager

Job Summary:
Responsible for managing and servicing a portfolio of small commercial business accounts. The role evaluates insurance risks, prepares quotes, handles renewals and endorsements, works with agents/brokers, and ensures profitable growth while delivering strong customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite small commercial risks in accordance with company guidelines and authority.
  • Review applications, loss history, financial information, and other underwriting data.
  • Quote and bind commercial insurance policies.
  • Manage new business, renewals, endorsements, cancellations, and policy changes.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with independent agents and brokers.
  • Analyze exposures and recommend appropriate coverage, limits, deductibles, and pricing.
  • Identify cross-selling and account-rounding opportunities.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, profitability, retention, and new-business production.
  • Coordinate with claims, billing, operations, and underwriting support teams.
  • Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, state regulations, and company procedures.
  • Use underwriting systems and automated tools to process business efficiently.

Qualifications

  • 2–5+ years of commercial insurance experience, depending on level.
  • Knowledge of small-business commercial insurance products and underwriting principles.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to interpret loss runs, financial information, and risk characteristics.
  • Strong communication and relationship-management skills.
  • Familiarity with insurance policy forms, rating, and underwriting systems.

Compensation: The base salary range for this role is $55,000–$65,000 annually. Actual compensation will be based on factors including location, skills, experience, and internal equity.
