Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer (Electrical Substations) to join our Project Delivery division. In this individual contributor role, you will perform and support commissioning activities for high-voltage electrical substations and associated primary and secondary systems. Reporting directly to the Project Manager and functionally to the Commissioning Manager, you will ensure full compliance with client specifications, Australian Standards, utility requirements, and project schedules to deliver safe energisation and successful project handover.

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  • Safety Leadership: Uphold a strict zero-harm safety culture and comply with WHS legislation. Prepare and follow SWMS, JSEAs, and commissioning risk assessments. Confirm all permits, isolations, and access authorities are fully in place before starting work.

  • Commissioning Execution: Contribute to execution plans and schedules aligned with the construction program. Perform hands-on commissioning of assigned primary plant, secondary systems, protection, control, communications, SCADA, metering, and HV cables (including FAT, SAT, and integrated systems testing).

  • Staged Energisation: Support staged and first energisation activities, verifying that all prerequisites and readiness criteria are met before recommending progression to the next stage.

  • Documentation & Quality: Complete detailed commissioning procedures, ITPs, test sheets, protection/functional test reports, and as-built documentation. Track Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) and effectively close out commissioning hold points.

  • Program Coordination: Interface closely with construction and engineering teams. Liaise with clients, utilities, Owner's Engineers, Independent Verifiers, AEMO, and network control centres as directed. Identify and escalate commissioning risks for prompt mitigation.

  • Technical Support: Provide expert technical input and guidance to test technicians, HV electricians, and site contractors. Support resource and equipment planning for assigned tasks.

Requirements

Qualifications & Certifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent qualification.
  • Current Australian Driver License.
  • Construction Induction Card (White Card).
  • High Voltage (HV) Switching Accreditation (or immediate eligibility).
  • Current CPR / Low Voltage (LV) Rescue and First Aid Certificate.
  • Advanced proficiency in English (B2 level minimum).
Required Experience & Technical Expertise

Minimum 5 years of hands-on commissioning experience within high-voltage electrical substations and power infrastructure projects.
Proven track record working within multidisciplinary commissioning teams across brownfield, greenfield, and live network environments.
Preferred Domain Experience: Strong background in 33kV to 330kV substations, utility transmission projects, Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), and renewable energy projects (Solar, Wind, and BESS).

Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of HV substations, power transformers, protection systems (including IEC 61850), SCADA/RTUs, HV switching, and cable/transformer/relay testing methodologies.

Software Competency: Proficiency with protection relay software (such as OMICRON, DIGSI, AcSELerator, EnerVista, EcoStruxure), SCADA interfaces, Bluebeam Revu, and MS Project or Primavera P6.


Operational & Physical Requirements
  • Strong technical, planning, and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail in test execution.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills within a multi-discipline site environment.
  • Flexibility for Travel: Frequent site-based work in live electrical environments across Australia, including remote locations, planned outages, and occasional night or weekend work.
  • Willingness to participate in emergency response and fault restoration activities where required.
