Commissioning Manager - Distributed Generation BESS
Description
About Us
Fractal Power is a vertically integrated power company built for the modern grid. We own and operate across the entire stack, combining utility-scale energy storage infrastructure with algorithmic trading and dispatch to deliver power precisely where and when it’s needed most.
We are backed by the world’s leading infrastructure and deeptech investors, including Riot, Definition, and Worldbuild.
Why Join Us?
Demand for power is growing at the fastest rate since WWII yet supply is stranded behind worsening transmission and interconnection bottlenecks. The new economy requires a new model of power delivery, one that’s vertically integrated, algorithmically operated, and co-located with demand.
We solve the last-mile infrastructure problem by vertically integrating across the entire value chain of American power - from greenfield development, to algorithmic optimization, dispatch, and power trading across a fleet of distributed resources - allowing us to deliver power where and when it's needed most on the grid. We have the ambition, the team, and the zeal to create the next great power company and we are looking for fanatical people to join us.
Role Overview
You will own commissioning across Fractal’s growing fleet of distribution-connected, utility-scale battery energy storage projects in ERCOT, from late-stage construction through energization, ERCOT approvals, and commercial operation.
You will serve as our in-house commissioning lead, responsible for carrying each project cleanly through ERCOT’s Part 1 (Approval to Energize), Part 2 (Approval to Synchronize), and Part 3 (Approval for Commercial Operation) milestones. You will hold our EPC, equipment vendors, and commissioning agents to a single standard: every system tested, every point verified, every approval secured on schedule. You will be a senior, cross-functional leader at the company with extraordinary agency, ownership, and expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Own the commissioning program across the portfolio: develop commissioning plans, schedules, and test procedures for each project, and drive them from mechanical completion through COD
Manage the ERCOT commissioning process end to end, including Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 submittals, resource registration data, telemetry checkout, and coordination with ERCOT, our QSE, and the interconnecting utility
Lead utility witness testing with the TDSP or cooperative
Own communications and controls integration: verify SCADA, RTU, power plant controller, EMS, BMS, and PCS functionality, including point-to-point checkout, DNP3 and Modbus mapping, and telemetry to the QSE and utility
Direct functional and integrated systems testing, including energization sequencing, startup testing, capacity and performance testing, and reactive power and frequency response verification
Coordinate fire and life safety acceptance testing with the AHJ, including fire suppression, detection, and alarm systems in line with NFPA 855 and applicable codes
Hold the EPC and vendors accountable: review commissioning deliverables, witness tests, issue and close deficiency reports, and validate commissioning milestones before payment is released
Oversee third-party commissioning agents, testing firms, and vendor field service engineers
Own field presence at key milestones, including energization, synchronization, and performance testing, and serve as Fractal’s point of contact on site during commissioning
Support Project Management with turnover to operations: ensure complete test records, as-built settings, punch list closure, and documentation handoff to the asset management and trading teams
Build Fractal’s internal commissioning standards, checklists, and test templates so each successive project starts from a proven basis
Qualifications
5 to 7 years in commissioning, startup, or field engineering on utility-scale energy or heavy infrastructure projects at a developer, IPP, owner’s engineer, EPC contractor, or testing firm
Direct experience commissioning BESS or other inverter-based resources in ERCOT is strongly preferred
Working knowledge of ERCOT’s resource commissioning process, including Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 approvals
Experience coordinating witness testing and energization with Texas utilities, TDSPs, or electric cooperatives
Degree in electrical engineering preferred; candidates with equivalent technical backgrounds and strong field commissioning experience are encouraged to apply
NETA certification is a plus
Based in Texas, with willingness to travel up to 75% to project sites across the state
