Commodity Buyer (Mechanical / Fabrication)

Summary

Sourcers and negotiates fabrication parts (CNC, sheet metal, tooling, plastics) from Asian suppliers, manages RFQs, BOM costing, and PO execution for a precision engineering firm.

Key Responsibilities

1. Fabrication Sourcing & RFQ Management

  • Source fabrication parts including:

  • CNC machining (Precision parts, fixtures)

  • Sheet metal fabrication (Laser cut, bending, welding)

  • Tooling (Molds, dies, jigs, fixtures)

  • Plastic injection / die casting parts

  • Prepare and send RFQs based on drawings (2D/3D) and BOM

  • Perform:

- Cost comparison

- Lead time analysis

- Supplier capability evaluation

  • Work with engineering on DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and cost optimization

2. BOM Costing & Quotation Support

  • Analyse mechanical BOM and perform cost roll-up for RFQs

  • Evaluate:

- Raw material cost (Aluminium, steel, plastic resins)

- Processing cost (Machining, finishing, surface treatment)

- Provide competitive costing to Sales

3. Purchasing Execution (PO Management)

  • Generate and release Purchase Orders (POs) in ERP system

  • Ensure:

- Correct pricing, quantity, and specifications

- Agreed lead times are met

  • Follow up with suppliers on:

- Order confirmation

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum 3–5 years in procurement of fabrication / mechanical parts.

  • Experience in EMS / Contract manufacturing environment preferred.

Skillset(s) Requirement:

  • Ability to read Engineering drawings (2D/3D) and GD&T basics (tolerance understanding)

  • Knowledge of fabrication processes like CNC machining, sheet metal, injection moulding

  • Familiar with ERP systems

  • Knowledge of surface finishing (anodizing, plating, powder coating)

  • Experience sourcing in China / SEA supplier base
