Overview

CEEW seeks a Communication Design Intern to join the Outreach team’s Publications, Films, and Cartoons vertical. The intern will bring a balanced blend of design, editorial, and research skills to support the creation of high-quality institutional knowledge products and contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen CEEW’s communications output. This role is ideal for someone who can move fluidly between refining text, producing compelling visual elements, and conducting structured design research — ensuring our publications are editorially rigorous, visually purposeful, and informed by current best practice in the field.

Key Responsibilities

1. Editorial Production

  • Provide light-touch proofreading and copyediting support for publications, briefs, and decks to ensure clarity, coherence, and adherence to CEEW’s editorial guidelines.

  • Maintain editorial and design hygiene, ensuring consistency in formatting, typography, and layout.

  • Organise publication assets and maintain records for knowledge management.

2. Visual Design & Illustration

  • Conceptualise and design publication elements such as covers, section dividers, editorial illustrations, infographics, and data visualisations.

  • Ensure design alignment with CEEW’s brand identity.

  • Design presentation decks and visual assets for publications and related outreach.

3. Workflow & Coordination

  • Track publication timelines, ensuring on-time delivery.

  • Liaise with designers, vendors, and internal stakeholders for smooth production processes.

  • Apply and adhere to CEEW’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in all workflows.

4. Research & Proposal Development

  • Track design and communications practices across peer organisations and adjacent creative sectors to identify trends and opportunities relevant to CEEW's context.

  • Assist in preparing communication-related proposals, concept notes, and drafts for internal/external stakeholders.

  • Research how audiences engage with policy and environmental communication across formats — digital, print, video, visual — and synthesise findings to inform creative decision-making across the vertical.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) or alternative design softwares for design and illustration.

  • A strong eye for visual storytelling.

  • Strong command of written English with proven proofreading and copyediting skills.

  • Familiarity with end-to-end editorial and design processes for publications.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.

Preferred

  • Experience in creating infographics and other data-driven visuals.

  • Knowledge of accessibility standards in publications.

  • Familiarity with design research methods — such as benchmarking, competitor analysis, audience research, or user experience principles — and an interest in applying them to communications contexts.

  • Interest in or exposure to digital-first publishing, templated design systems, or the use of AI-assisted tools in editorial and design workflows.

Learning Opportunities

This internship offers:

  • Hands-on experience producing flagship institutional publications from concept to delivery.

  • Exposure to high editorial and design standards in the sustainability and policy research sector.

  • The opportunity to lead original design research — benchmarking peer organisations, engaging with internal stakeholders, and contributing insights that directly shape CEEW’s future communications strategy.

  • Mentorship from experienced communications professionals, with exposure to the full spectrum of the publications lifecycle — from concept and commissioning through to print and digital distribution.

  • Opportunities to develop a multidisciplinary skill set spanning visual design, editorial practice, strategic communications, and applied research — a distinctive combination for a career in policy communications.

Compensation

Competitive compensation – commensurate to the experience and matching the best of standards adopted by the industry or other similar organisations for similar roles.
