Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)

ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities and overall project management. We are locally owned, and we are currently looking for a Field Safety Technician with experience within the construction industry.

A Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) monitors construction sites to ensure job sites are OSHA compliant and in accordance with health and safety laws. Identifies workplace hazards, and trains workers to prevent accidents, conducts audits, investigations on accidents, injuries or near-misses.

Duties and Responsibilities

This list of Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented:

• Conduct routine safety audits of work areas, equipment, and subcontractor practices.
• Identify unsafe conditions and issue immediate corrective actions or halt work in dangerous situations.
• Review and investigate accidents or near-misses to determine root causes and recommend preventive measures.
• Maintain logs of daily safety activities, equipment inspections, and training records.
• Help implement and maintain safety policies and procedures in line with OSHA and local regulations.
• Perform risk assessments, develop safe work procedures, and ensure tasks are carried out safely.
• Maintain accurate safety records, inspection reports, and compliance documentation.
• Work with project managers, supervisors, and regulatory agencies to ensure safety compliance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of the basic principles of occupational safety within the construction industry, training policies, regulations, specifications, and requirements governing safety, compliance, and accident prevention.
• Knowledge of principles and practices of assessments, inspections, and investigations as related to job responsibilities.
• Demonstrated experience within the construction sector as an Occupational Health and Safety Officer, Technician, Specialist and/or coordinator in a progressive capacity.
• Able to manage stressful situations and address potential problems.
• Ability to apply deductive reasoning and apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense.
• Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking in ways others will understand.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of our projects.
• Keep up to date with OSHA Regulations, Compliance and Reporting, and implement changes as needed.
• Must have a valid Driver's License with an excellent driving record.
• Must have ability to clear background check to gain access to federal and state job sites.
• Fluent Bilingual English/Spanish is required.

Experience & Education

• Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
• Must have at least two (2) years of experience in construction safety management and have adequate safety training (First Aid, CPR, AED, and OSHA-30/CHST.
• A combination of experience and education will be accepted.
• Must possess clean driving record and a current driver's license at the time of application.
  

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

• Moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion required, including sustained walking, standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting and carrying.
• May have to work on ladders, in tunnels and confined spaces, hazardous atmospheres and in protective garments.
• May work in adverse conditions which require exposure to inclement weather, noise, noxious odors, and/or gases.
• Able to push, pull or lift 10 – 20 lbs.
• Is required to conduct on-site visits to construction locations.
• Is required to be on call 24/7.

Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, physical screening and background check. Must have reliable transportation to/from work, must have a valid driver's license at time of application.
