POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Project Director or Regional Director, the Construction Manager is responsible for the overall execution of distribution powerline construction projects, providing leadership to field supervision and acting as the primary technical resource for construction activities. The Construction Manager oversees multiple concurrent projects, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Company standards, Client requirements, schedule, budget, and regulatory obligations.
This role provides leadership to Superintendents, General Forepersons, Forepersons, and field crews while driving operational excellence, workforce planning, client satisfaction, and continuous improvement across distribution operations.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Construction Operations & Field Leadership
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching to field supervision, crews, and subcontractors to ensure safe and efficient execution of distribution construction activities.
- Support the planning, coordination, and execution of overhead and underground distribution projects, including new construction, upgrades, maintenance, rebuilds, and restoration activities.
- Conduct regular field visits, safety observations, and quality reviews to ensure work is completed in accordance with Company, Client, and regulatory requirements.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, work plans, and schedules to support effective project execution.
- Provide technical guidance and assist with troubleshooting construction challenges and implementing effective solutions.
- Collaborate with Work Methods Specialists, Project Managers, and field supervision to develop safe and efficient construction approaches.
- Ensure equipment, materials, and resources are effectively managed to support productivity and cost control.
- Support mobilization and demobilization of crews, equipment, and subcontractors based on project requirements.
Safety, Quality & Compliance
- Champion a strong safety culture by ensuring safe work practices, procedures, and expectations are understood and followed.
- Ensure field teams complete required documentation, inspections, and quality checks in accordance with project requirements.
- Verify tools, equipment, materials, permits, and training requirements are in place prior to work execution.
- Support the investigation, reporting, and resolution of safety concerns, quality issues, and deficiencies.
- Ensure construction activities comply with project quality plans, Inspection Test Plans (ITPs), technical specifications, and client standards.
Project Execution & Stakeholder Management
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers and Operations leadership to support project schedules, budgets, and performance objectives.
- Assist with workforce forecasting and resource planning to ensure the right personnel and skill sets are available for project requirements.
- Manage and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, vendors, and project stakeholders.
- Support the resolution of RFIs, NCRs, change management items, and project-related issues.
- Participate in client meetings, project reviews, and construction planning discussions as required.
Training & Continuous Improvement
- Mentor and develop field leadership teams while supporting employee growth and technical development.
- Identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity, quality, and construction processes.
- Collaborate with Operations Management and Shared Services teams to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support the development of safe work procedures, construction methods, and best practices.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
- Journeyman Powerline Technician certification or equivalent required.
- 10+ years of progressive experience within the utility distribution construction industry or a related construction environment.
- Previous experience leading field crews, supervisors, or construction teams.
- Experience with overhead and underground electrical distribution projects is strongly preferred.
- Valid and current driver's licence.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong leadership, coaching, and mentoring abilities.
- Strong understanding of distribution construction practices and field operations.
- Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Familiarity with Bluebeam Revu, Adobe Acrobat, or similar construction markup tools.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends, as required.
Additional Details
This position requires candidates to:
- Successfully complete pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
- Maintain a valid driver's licence and provide an acceptable driver's abstract.
- Travel regularly to project sites and office locations.
- Support emergency response and restoration activities when required.
The range shown is the expected base pay range for this role. Final compensation will be determined based on role requirements, experience, qualifications, work location, applicable project/site requirements, internal equity, and any applicable collective agreement or union requirements.
This range does not include overtime, premiums, per diem / LOA, bonuses, benefits, or other forms of compensation unless specifically stated in the job posting.
