Paid summer 2027 internship (10-12 weeks, 40 hrs/week) at GEMCO Constructors' Carmel, IN office, supporting commercial plumbing construction projects: tracking submittals and budgets, assisting estimating takeoffs, coordinating trades, and walking active job sites. Tools include Excel, Outlook, and exposure to Procore, Bluebeam, ComputerEase, or AutoBid.

Location: Carmel, Indiana main office, with regular time on active job sites

Term: Summer 2027, 10 to 12 weeks at 40 hours per week.

Compensation: Paid hourly at $22.00 to $25.00

Reports to: Project Manager, Construction, Indiana Region, with mentorship from the Superintendent, Construction Indianapolis Region

ABOUT THE ROLE

GEMCO is a national mechanical, electrical, plumbing, building automation, and service contractor. This internship sits inside GEMCO’s Indiana Construction department, reporting to a Construction Project Manager, with heavy focus on plumbing. Plumbing is one of the earliest trades on a site and one of the last to finish, so you will see the full arc of a project rather than one slice of it, from site utilities and underground work through fixture set, testing, and turnover.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Support active commercial plumbing projects: domestic water, sanitary and storm, natural gas, medical gas, and fixtures

Track fixture, valve, and specialty submittals, subcontracts, equipment buyouts, and purchase orders against the installation schedule and budget

Assist the estimating team with takeoffs and quantity tracking for pipe, fittings, hangers, and insulation

Coordinate underground and above ceiling routing with the mechanical, electrical, and fire protection trades

Walk sites with the foreman during underground, rough in, and trim phases and compare installed work to the drawings

Help document hydrostatic and pressure testing, inspections, and any inspection and code requirements established by the authority having jurisdiction

Support labor hour tracking, manpower planning, and monthly billing preparation

Assist with punch list tracking, fixture startup, and closeout documentation

Follow GEMCO safety expectations in the office and on every site you visit

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

How a plumbing scope is estimated and sequenced, from site utilities through final trim and turnover

What drives productivity on a piping crew, and how labor hours are planned and forecast

How code, inspection, and testing requirements shape the way work gets installed

How a project manager protects a contract financially, from estimate and buyout through billings and change orders

Direct exposure to The GEMCO Way, our project manager training program

WHAT WE LOOK FOR

Working toward a degree in Construction Management, Building Construction Management, Construction Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or a related program

Sophomore standing or above preferred, though we consider strong first year students

Able to work in an office and on active sites, including trenches and ladders, with required personal protective equipment

Practical, organized, and comfortable talking with field craft as well as office staff

Developing skill in blueprint reading, construction document interpretation, and material takeoff

Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook

HELPFUL BUT NOT REQUIRED

Prior construction, trade, or field experience of any kind, including plumbing or pipefitting

Exposure to Procore, Bluebeam, ComputerEase, or AutoBid, the software our project managers use

A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for site visits
