The Job at a Glance

We are hiring our first dedicated Controller to own the accounting function end-to-end as evermore scales through a high-growth phase in highly regulated industries. Reporting to the Finance leader, the Controller is the senior accounting leader responsible for the integrity of our financial reporting, the strength of our internal control environment, and the timeliness and accuracy of all information that flows to our board, lenders, auditors, and prospective investors.

This is a builder’s role. You will inherit a functioning close process and a modern finance stack (QuickBooks Online, Ramp, Anrok, and Rippling) and take ownership of scaling the function by building the controls, processes, and, over time, the team needed to support a high-growth company. Partnering with the Finance team on audit, diligence, and lender compliance, you will serve as the operational owner who ensures the numbers are accurate and reliable.

What makes this role different: As our founding Controller, you will be building the accounting org with real ownership, direct exposure to the board and investors, and the runway to shape the function and the team as we grow. We are looking for someone who is energized by a broad scope.

What You Will Do

Working within an organization created at the intersection of health care, retail and financial technology, no two days will look the same. Typical responsibilities of the role include:

Close, Reporting & Controls

  • Own the monthly and quarterly close end-to-end—journal entries, accruals, prepaids, reconciliations, and review—delivering accurate, on-time financials the business and board can rely on.
  • Design, document, and operate the internal control environment, including the controls required for SOC 1 (and supporting SOC 2 and PCI work alongside our security and compliance partners).
  • Establish and enforce accounting policies under U.S. GAAP, with particular ownership of ASC 606 revenue recognition across our benefits-administration and payments lines of business.
  • Build the close calendar, reconciliation cadence, and review discipline that keep us audit-ready year-round, not just at year-end.

Transactional Operations

  • Run AP and AR end-to-end: vendor payments, customer invoicing, collections, and the controls around each (including through Ramp and our billing workflows).
  • Own the payroll accounting interface with Rippling and ensure accurate compensation, benefits, and equity accounting.
  • Drive cash management, bank reconciliations, and the reporting that supports our lender (LSA) compliance obligations.

Audit, Tax & Regulatory Compliance

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day liaison to our external auditor and tax advisor, managing audit and SOC deliverables to closure.
  • Own tax and regulatory compliance: sales/use tax, multi-state registrations and nexus, foreign-corporation filings, and franchise/income tax coordination.
  • Track and operationalize compliance obligations across a payments-and-government-benefits business, partnering with Compliance, Security, and Legal Operations.

Investor & Lender Reporting

  • Prepare and own board-ready and diligence-ready financial reporting that withstands investor and auditor scrutiny.
  • Support fundraising as the owner of the accounting record: quality of earnings, audited financials, and historical reporting.
  • Produce lender compliance reporting and covenant/milestone tracking.

Systems & Scale

  • Continuously improve the finance stack—ERP, expense management, payments and banking platforms, sales-tax automation, and FP&A tooling—and drive automation across the close and reporting cycle.
  • Build and, over time, lead the accounting team: hiring, mentoring, and structuring the function as the company grows.

About You

While every candidate brings a unique resume and prospective, an ideal candidate will include:

  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a senior accounting leadership role (Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Director) at a high-growth, venture-backed company.
  • A demonstrated track record of building and scaling accounting functions in startup or scale-up environments—not just operating mature ones.
  • CPA strongly preferred; a foundation in public accounting (audit) is a plus.
  • Deep, hands-on command of U.S. GAAP and ASC 606 revenue recognition.
  • Direct experience standing up or operating a control environment for SOC 1 / SOC 2 (or equivalent) and managing external audits to closure.
  • Experience owning multi-state and regulatory tax compliance, ideally in a fintech, payments, healthcare, or otherwise regulated industry.
  • Fluency with a modern finance stack—QuickBooks Online, Ramp (or Brex/Bill.com), Anrok, Rippling, and BI tools such as BigQuery/Metabase—and a bias toward automation.
  • Comfort being the senior accounting owner in a lean, fast-moving environment, with the maturity to operate independently and the appetite to build a team.
  • Excellent cross-functional communication with engineering, operations, legal, compliance, and external partners.
  • High integrity, strong ownership, and accountability for compliant, reliable financial results
