About Plug
Plug is the marketplace for used electric vehicles. Consumers get an instant cash offer backed by battery-health data, and dealers across the US bid in real time on that inventory. Former Tesla executives founded Plug in 2023. We’ve facilitated $150M in EV sales and raised a $20M Series A led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Why Plug
You’ll own a piece of the biggest infrastructure opportunity in automotive.
You’ll work on a platform built exclusively for EVs, with nothing adapted from legacy automotive.
You’ll be part of an AI-native company. We’re rethinking how work gets done at a fundamental level.
You’ll work directly with operators who have scaled multi-billion dollar businesses in automotive, EV, and marketplaces.
You’ll have real ownership, high autonomy, and a direct line to company outcomes.
Role overview
Plug needs a Staff-level Controller to build the accounting function with us. We run QuickBooks Online with an outsourced accounting team today. You’ll own the close, run our first financial statement audit day to day, and move work from the outsourced team to in-house or automated processes. You’ll report to our VP, Finance. This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports for now.
Our accounting is operational. We buy, consign, and auction vehicles. We hold consumer and lienholder funds while titles clear. We run a dealer financing program through a subsidiary and report monthly to a lender. Each of those flows touches the ledger, and you’ll make sure the ledger is right.
What you’ll own
Close and reporting: The monthly GAAP close across Plug Technologies and its dealer subsidiary, including intercompany and consolidation. You’ll build the close calendar, reconciliations, and accounting policies. The VP, Finance approves policies.
Inventory and revenue: Owned and consigned vehicles, and revenue recognition under ASC 606. You’ll write the memos on whether Plug is principal or agent for each type of transaction.
Funds in transit: The reconciliation process and controls for consumer payouts, lienholder payoffs, title and escrow balances, and dealer settlements. You’ll automate the daily match and work the exceptions.
Lender reporting: Prepare the monthly borrowing base certificate, covenant calculations, and supporting schedules. The VP, Finance signs and owns the lender relationship.
Treasury and spend: Run AP (), the corporate card program, and expense policy. Support daily cash positioning and the short-term forecast. The VP, Finance approves payments.
Audit and diligence: Run our first audit day to day and write the technical accounting memos. Build the data room for Series B diligence. The VP, Finance owns the auditor and investor relationships.
Tax and vendors: Work with outside providers on sales and use tax, 1099s, and entity filings. Direct the outsourced accounting team’s close work, and take tasks back as you automate them.
Automation: Use AI and our data stack to automate reconciliations and close tasks, so the function scales more slowly than the business does.
Success at 12 months
The books close in 7 business days or fewer, with full reconciliations.
We’re audit-ready, with a completed audit and a remediation plan for any findings.
Series B diligence ran off a data room you built.
Inventory, funds in transit, and lender reporting reconcile on a set cadence, with documented controls.
At least half of the outsourced work is in-house or automated.
What you bring
8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including a multi-entity close you owned end to end at a high-growth company.
Strong US GAAP knowledge, including ASC 606, inventory accounting, and multi-entity consolidation.
You’ve run a first audit as the day-to-day lead, or an audit from start to finish.
Lender reporting experience, including borrowing bases and covenant compliance.
Funds-flow or treasury experience, ideally at a company that holds or moves customer funds.
You’re comfortable with data and use AI in your own work. You can point to specific examples.
Clear writing. Your memos and schedules are ones an auditor or lender can follow.
Nice to have

Public accounting experience
Marketplace, automotive, fintech, or payments background
SQL, Snowflake, Metabase, or Modern Treasury

How we work
We hire builders who scope their own work, move fast, and decide with data. You’ll work independently, with no direct reports for now, and report to the VP, Finance. The role follows the close and audit calendar, so expect heavier hours around month-end, lender deadlines, and fundraising.
If you bring most of this, we want to hear from you.
Compensation and benefits
Base salary is $140,000 to $180,000, plus equity. We benchmarked the range against market data for comparable roles at companies of our stage in Los Angeles. Your offer within the range depends on your experience and skills.
Health, dental, and vision insurance
401(k)

Unlimited PTO
Daily lunch and dinner stipend, plus a fully stocked kitchen
Dog-friendly office and on-site EV charging
