SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Police Major, prepares crossing zone, and assists children in crossing streets safely on a seasonal basis while children attend school.

ESSENTIAL EXAMPLES OF THE WORK

  • Prepares school crossing zone by placing warning cones in the street.
  • As children arrive, takes them safely across the street, watching traffic closely and stopping cars if necessary.
  • When children are finished crossing, removes cones from street.
  • Process is repeated two times a day, when children travel to and from school.
  • Acts as a liaison between children and city public safety function.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of city traffic patterns and school crossing regulations.
  • Ability to obtain knowledge of school zone safety procedures;
  • Ability to lift, move and carry moderate objects and to work under variable weather conditions;
  • Ability to carry out instructions;
  • Ability to read and write;
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to grasp, crouch, stoop, bend, climb, stretch, and walk in order to perform the job; vision and hearing acceptable for performance of duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work environment may be somewhat disagreeable due to exposure to several disagreeable elements or to one very disagreeable element; work environment demands minimal confinement with little protective equipment required.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Experience working with members of the public.
