The Digital and Technology Department enables secure, sustainable and innovative technology capabilities that support Council services and strategic outcomes. Within the department, the Data Analytics and Integrations function strengthens Council’s enterprise data platforms, governance, integrations, analytics and AI capabilities.
About the Position
We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Data Architect to shape and evolve Council’s enterprise data capability. Reporting to the Lead Data Analytics and Integrations, you will lead the development of enterprise data architecture, data models, standards and data integration frameworks across Council’s Azure-based data environment.
You will provide strategic architectural leadership while remaining actively involved in technical delivery. Working closely with the Data Team, business stakeholders and technology partners, you will design secure, scalable and reusable data solutions that support operational services, business intelligence, analytics, regulatory reporting and emerging AI capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and governing Council’s enterprise data architecture, standards, data models and data integration patterns
- Leading the design, enhancement and optimisation of Council’s Azure-based modern data platform
- Designing and overseeing data integrations, APIs, ELT processes, pipelines and reusable data assets
- Establishing trusted data foundations for reporting, analytics and AI
- Strengthening data governance, quality, master and reference data management, lineage, security, privacy and lifecycle management
- Providing strategic advice on data investments, emerging technologies and enterprise data capabilities
- Translating complex business requirements into secure, sustainable and value-driven data solutions.
Skills and Experience
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
- Extensive experience in enterprise data architecture, modern data platforms, data warehousing and enterprise data modelling
- Strong hands-on capability across Microsoft Azure, including Azure Data Factory, Azure SQL, Azure Data Lake and Power BI, together with Microsoft Fabric and Databricks
- Proven expertise developing Conceptual, Logical and Physical Data Models, dimensional models and enterprise data architectures
- Demonstrated experience designing Lakehouse solutions and medallion architecture patterns across Bronze, Silver and Gold layers
- Strong experience delivering APIs, ETL/ELT frameworks, scalable data pipelines, workload orchestration and platform optimisation
- Practical knowledge of data governance, data quality, metadata management, data lineage, privacy, security, compliance and lifecycle management
- Experience applying Git, DevOps/DataOps, source control and CI/CD practices to data and analytics solutions
- Highly developed communication, stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
- The ability to combine strategic architectural leadership with hands-on technical delivery
Requirements
- Degree qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Management or a relevant discipline
- At least 10 years’ experience across data architecture, data modelling, data integration, data governance, reporting and analytics using Microsoft Azure
- Demonstrated experience working as a Data Architect, Data Platform Architect or in an equivalent role within a complex enterprise environment
- Satisfactory National Police Check
- Other pre-employment checks may be required depending on the role requirements
