Data Engineer

Data & AI Engineer | London - Hybrid | Up to £67,000 + Bonus

We’re partnering with a technology-led consultancy that combines data, software, and AI to deliver research and analysis for leading organisations across sustainability, investment, and other complex areas.

Alongside their consultancy offering, the business has built its own data platform, combining structured company data with AI-assisted analysis. They’re now looking for a Data & AI Engineer to join their growing engineering team and take ownership of defined components of the platform.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with around 2–3 years’ experience who wants to work at the intersection of Python, data engineering and applied AI, with genuine ownership and exposure to how AI is used in a real-world product.

The Role

As a Data & AI Engineer, you’ll sit between the junior and senior engineering levels, taking ownership of defined components of the platform while contributing to how those solutions are designed and delivered.

A key part of the role will be being able to understand and explain AI clearly. You’ll work closely with technical and non-technical colleagues, helping them understand how AI-generated assessments work, where they can be trusted, and where their limitations sit.

There will also be occasional supported client exposure, giving you the opportunity to see first‑hand how the technology you build is being used.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Own and develop components of AI-assisted assessment pipelines
  • Work across prompt design, quality assurance, evaluation, and citation checking
  • Build and maintain data ingestion pipelines and models using Python and PostgreSQL
  • Run evaluations of pipeline performance and use the results to improve outputs
  • Work with company, issuer, and portfolio data at scale
  • Contribute to the continued development of the company’s AI methodology

Technical Ownership & Quality

  • Own engineering work end‑to‑end, from development through testing and deployment
  • Monitor and troubleshoot pipelines to ensure reliability and accuracy
  • Maintain clear technical documentation
  • Review work from more junior engineers and help raise engineering standards
  • Contribute to technical decisions around how new functionality should be built

Communication & Stakeholder Impact

  • Explain AI methodologies and outputs clearly to non-technical colleagues
  • Help consultants understand what AI-generated assessments can and cannot tell them
  • Occasionally support senior colleagues in explaining technical concepts to clients
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, practical explanations

What We’re Looking For

  • Around 2–3 years’ professional experience in software or data engineering
  • Hands‑on experience building applications or workflows using LLM APIs
  • Experience with prompt design and some form of AI/LLM evaluation
  • Strong SQL skills and understanding of relational data modelling
  • Ability to explain how language models work, including their limitations, to non-technical audiences
  • Experience owning work end‑to‑end, including testing, deployment, monitoring, and documentation
  • Comfortable working in a small business where requirements and scope aren't always fully defined
  • Cloud experience, ideally Microsoft Azure
  • Experience with document processing or information extraction at scale
  • Financial services, investment management, or sustainability experience
  • Experience presenting technical work to non-technical stakeholders

Why Apply?

  • £60,000 – £67,000 salary + discretionary bonus
  • Hybrid working (1‑2 days per week in London)
  • Genuine ownership of AI and data engineering projects
  • Work on AI that is central to a live product rather than experimental
  • Hands‑on experience across Python, PostgreSQL, LLMs and data pipelines
  • Opportunity to work closely with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Occasional exposure to institutional clients in a supported capacity
  • Clear progression path towards a senior engineering position
  • Join a small, collaborative team where your work has a direct impact

If you’re a Data or Software Engineer with strong Python experience and genuine hands‑on exposure to LLMs, and you’re looking for a role where you can combine technical ownership with applied AI and real‑world impact, I’d love to hear from you.
